Samish Indian Nation

#TBT — This photo from between 1900 – 1910 shows war canoe races that were held on Guemes Channel and Fidalgo Bay. During this time period, the New Guemes Village disbanded, perhaps over pressure from non-native settlers to control one of the only sources of fresh spring water on the island. A small group of Samish established a workers settlement near the fish canneries at Ship Harbor when Anacortes became the salmon canning capital of the world from about 1905 to 1917.
