IN RECOGNITION OF WORLD REFUGEE DAY

“I am originally from Syria. When the conflict escalated in 2012 I was put in prison by the regime. I spent a month in prison under harsh condition. They tortured me both mentally and physically. The severe form of torture left me quadriplegic once out of prison. I was innocent and I did not commit any crimes. I left Syria and stayed in Jordan for five years undergoing medical treatment. I did physical therapy for about two years in Jordan.... It took complete three years for me to be done with resettlement process oversees. It was a tedious process. I am glad I made it to the United States. My resettlement means everything for me. There are lot of opportunities. I could see physical therapist. I feel better now. I’ve many new American friends. When I got here I did not have any English. In 2017, I started going to CPCC to learn English. Beginning this Fall, I’ll start taking regular classes. I feel like I’ve improved my English significantly. I’ll eventually transfer to UNCC to earn bachelor’s in Computer Science. I think that’s one of the best degrees that will allow me to work with my existing physical condition. In five years from now, maybe I’ll have my own company or maybe I’ll be working for others. We’ll see.”
