Chinese courts have discovered a new way to deter pesky lawyers: by ripping their clothes off.
That’s what happened to Wu Liangshu, a lawyer in Guangxi Province representing a client in a civil case, visited a local court in the city of Nanning. He submitted case documents, but staff told him the court did not have the needed jurisdiction.
Shortly afterwards, things made a turn for the outrageous when Wu phoned his client, Shanghai-based news portal The Paper reported June ...3. Two onsite police officers, thinking he was badmouthing the court, demanded that Wu turn over his phone. Wu refused, and the officers set upon him with their fists. The "body search" left him half-naked.
Lawyers in China, especially those representing clients in human rights cases, often face harassment and violence from the authorities.
