Just thinking... How did India Walton beat Byron Brown?

An analysis of the map of election day results provides insight into India Walton's victory over Byron Brown.

The key to her victory was that she won the White liberal and progressive vote decisively on the West Side and North Buffalo.

...

The irony is that those Whites who benefitted the most from Brown's neoliberal city rejected him.

These West Side and North Buffalo Whites are also progressives aligned with the Black Lives Matter movement, and they want a city anchored by socioeconomic justice and racial equity.

Brown did have White support.

It was concentrated mostly among middle-class White South Buffalonians and working-class Whites in Black Rock.

The paradox is that Brown's electoral strength was in the Black community, among the very people most harmed by his neoliberal latte city vision. However, I believe this Black electoral support is more mirage than real.

I theorize that the Black stay-at-home non-vote was an oppositional statement to Mayor Byron Brown. Many folks did not like Byron but believed that India had no chance. So, they went to the bar rather than the polling booth or just stayed home or attended to other tasks.

Whatever, they did not vote, and their non-vote helped turned the tide for India.

It ain't over yet.

Byron Brown may not give up his dream of remaining the mayor of Buffalo and launch a write-in campaign.

This decision is tricky.

To win, is Bryon Brown willing to openly embrace Big Money, including the disliked Carl Paladino, and assassinate the character of a Black Woman? Is he willing to stoop to conquer?

Or, if he launches the write-in, will he distance himself from Big Money and run a campaign based on the issues?

In many ways, we will learn a lot about Byron Brown over the next few months.
