The Diary of Anne Frank Graphic Adaptation was removed in Indian River County for “minimization of the Holocaust.” It’s Florida state standards to teach the Holocaust historically correct. Specifically 6A-1.094124 (3)(b). So, as this specific book minimizes the holocaust, then it violates this rule. There are multiple versions for age appropriateness and multiple versions of the diary itself. Only this ONE version of the Diary of Anne Frank was removed. It is not an entirely …accurate portrayal of the tragedy of the holocaust and murders against the Jewish population because of hate.
Historically Anne Frank envisioned herself as a writer and was inspired to write this diary that shared her and her family experiences hiding from the Nazi’s. She was actually organizing it into a book to be published. Even her version featured the editing out of the entries about sex. Her father’s edited edition was published in 1947. The versions of The Diary Anne Frank and history books on the Holocaust children can access in IRC schools is already over 300 in number. Even the publisher of the book calls it a “biography.” meaning, it writes its own interpretive spin. It’s not the actual work. it quotes the work, but it’s not the diary in full - it chooses to offer a different view on the subject. In the ONE school it was removed from and being ONE book removed almost 100 other TRUE diaries remain on the shelves for children.
Dr. Moore, the Indian River County school district Superintendent explained why the book, “Anne Frank’s Diary: The Graphic Adaptation” adapted by Ari Folman was removed. He said, “This book was removed due to the content being inconsistent with policy/statute and was perceived to be a minimization of the events of the Holocaust. Please note that our media centers do have the original “Diary of Anne Frank.”
“Additionally, C&I (Curriculum and Instruction) met with The Community One Initiative, a local organization that is dedicated to Holocaust Education. During this meeting, the graphic adaptation of the book was shared with this organization and they were in agreement with this decision.”
