RIP Andrew Weatherall.
Shocking and sobering news. Andrew was the William Blake of dance music. Pioneer, innovator and all round God like genius, both in the studio and behind the decks.
Hearing “Loaded” for the first time on a smoke filled dance floor at Spectrum completely blew my mind...Still gives me tingles to think about. Was it The Stones? Was it dub? no, it was Andrew remixing Primal Scream ....
His depth charge bass heavy Dub sets and deep Techno sets were mind alte...ring. My favourites were the slower “ Chug “ Trance sets that went on for up to 5-6 hours and were “ never knowingly over 115bpm” off the scale in selection, delivery and excellence.
Lived below him in the 80’s in Battersea when I shared a council flat there with Alex Paterson. You couldn’t have wished for a better neighbour, Fugazi and Husker Du blasting out early sat mornings.
Incredible deep vocabulary of music and across so many genres. He wasn’t a pop snob ether, encouraging me with an early demo of “ Sunshine On A Rainy Day”, saying it was a summer anthem and offering to remix it, which made me take it seriously and then he did remix it and helped make it a huge pop hit. He added integrity, excellence and spiritual weight to anything he touched.
More recently he was using my outhouse Art studio in the garden for a temporary studio with long time engineer, writer and producer/ co pilot Nina Walsh and was really beautiful to have a few early morning reveries and musings with him and a great honour to play bass and collaborate with him ....
Condolences and thoughts to family, friends and colleagues.
Way too soon, he had so much more to give....
