INCENDIOS EN IBERÁ: EL FUEGO AVANZA EN SAN ALONSO
Desde hace días, un importante frente de fuego avanza desde el norte hacia San Alonso, en el corazón del Parque Iberá, donde junto al Gobierno de Corrientes y Parques Nacionales estamos reintroduciendo al yaguareté, la nutria gigante, el venado de las pampas, el pecarí de collar y el oso hormiguero gigante.
El fuego se encuentra a unos 5 km de las instalaciones y viviendas de nuestro equipo, y a la misma distancia del Centro d…e Reintroducción de Yaguareté (CRY) y de Nutria Gigante. Casi 50 personas trabajan allí sin pausa, día y noche, diseñando y realizando los cortafuegos necesarios para intentar detener el avance de las llamas hasta tanto lleguen las ansiadas lluvias, que se esperan para hoy a la tarde/noche.
Todos los animales que se encuentran en corrales de presuelta (las nutrias gigantes Coco, Alondra y sus cachorros y Nanay, y la yaguareté Mbarete) han sido movidos a lugares seguros en forma preventiva, por si el fuego llegara a alcanzar sus corrales. En estos lugares donde se encuentran provisoriamente resulta más sencillo detener el fuego en caso que finalmente arribe a San Alonso.

Necesitamos urgentemente insumos y fondos para continuar trabajando rápida y eficazmente para evitar el avance del fuego y, una vez que los fuegos pasen, comenzar un plan de restauración de los ambientes y la vida silvestre afectados por los incendios.

WILDFIRES IN IBERA: A FIRE FRONT MOVES FORWARD IN SAN ALONSO
An important fire front continues to move forward from the north of San Alonso Island, in the heart of Ibera Park. There, we are reintroducing the jaguar, the giant river otter, the pampas deer, the collared peccary, and the giant anteater with the Government of Corrientes and the National Parks Administration.
This morning, the fire line was about 5 km away from San Alonso facilities, our team’s houses, the Jaguar Reintroduction Center, and the Giant River Otter pens. About 50 people are working day and night designing and making the necessary firebreaks to stop the flames until the rain arrives, expected tonight.
All animals in the prerelease pens are safe: the giant river otters Coco, Alondra, their pups, Nanay, and the jaguar Mbarete. We moved them to secure places in case the fire reached their corrals and where it’s easier to battle the fires should they reach San Alonso quarters.
