A large phone fraud has taken place in Ballina.
On the 1st July a Ballina resident received a phone call from someone pretending to be from Telstra. The victim was told that hackers had attacked her WIFI. The victim was convinced to download 'viewshare' onto her computer. She was then convinced to buy thirty $100.00 itunes cards and read the numbers out over the phone. The caller was very convincing and kept the victim on the phone while she drove to the shops and made th...e purchases. The victim was told that they were doing a great thing for Australia.
This is the second 'Telstra' fraud reported to local police in the last few days. The itunes cards have already been cashed in, probably overseas.
Please don't let this happen to you. If you get a call from someone saying you have a virus on your computer HANG UP STRAIGHT AWAY. If they ask you to download software HANG UP STRAIGHT AWAY. If they ask you to buy Itunes cards HANG UP STRAIGHT AWAY.
Shopkeepers...if you see someone buying large numbers of itunes cards you may consider asking them why they are doing so. If they say that they were asked to by someone on the phone advise them that it is a scam!
