“I am in and you will know more soon,” Sviatoslav Vakarchuk, Okean Elzy frontman at The British Ukrainian Society event in London, falling short of confirming he will be running for the presidential seat. “I would like to bring into Ukrainian politics as many new faces as possible.” ”Power as such does not excite me. What drives me to politics is frustration with the current state of Ukrainian politics. Looking at all those faces on billboards around Kyiv is unbearable.” “We ...need new political leaders. I do not believe in revolutions as they do not provide sustainable solutions.” “Look at Ireland. It lost half of its population after the Potato Famine, moved on and it now has a GDP per capita higher than that of the metropolis.” “We should not fall into Putin’s trap: while we stand united against Russian aggression, we remain focused on internal issues in the country,” he said, adding that fighting corruption, reform of judiciary, strong institutions should be the priorities. UPDATE: As further detailed by Sviatoslav Vakarchuk's press service, internal problems of Ukraine like fighting corruption and reform of the judiciary should be the main issues of the presidential campaign. At the same time he called Ukrainians to stand united and firm against Russian aggression. He is sure Russian authorities “want chaos in Ukraine”, “they want all of us just to be focused on that threat without thinking about anything else what is going on inside the country. It’s a trap. I am not going to fall into this trap. And I urge you not”. “While standing united against Russian aggression, standing firm we still need not to fall into this trap and be focused on internal relations in country. Because I think that key is this”, - added Vakarchuk.
