Today, I became the state of Alabama’s first Black (first non-white, period) and youngest poet laureate. This is a dream made real. This is so much hard work culminating. This is for you and you and you and for the little seven year old Black girl named Ashley who heard her own bright spirit in Eloise Greenfield’s “Harriet Tubman.” I’m so honored to be a poet, so honored to celebrate with and for you all, so honored to carry on my dad’s exemplary legacy of service. And to be Black and fighting for liberation all the while, make no mistake.
