Update on the Highway 101 closure at MP 344, Hooskanaden Slide:
First and foremost, Carpenterville Road, Highway 255, IS still being used as the alternate route. If you must travel between Brookings and Gold Beach, please allow for extra time as the detour has areas of gravel and sections of one lane road. Please avoid travel between Gold Beach and Brookings if it is not necessary.
Hooskanaden Slide on Highway 101 is actively moving still. Yesterday morning the reports wer...e that the road surface had sunk approximately two feet below grade. 24 hours later, the road surface in places is over 12 feet below grade, and there are multiple sections of buckled or torn road surface. There is active movement of the ground both above and below the slide.
Be prepared for this to be a long term event. This will not be as simple as opening a lane up for traffic within short order. The damage to the highway is both impressive and extensive. Understandably, the loss of this section of highway for any period of time is an inconvenience. Work is being done to repair and reopen this section as quickly and as safely as possible. We will continue to monitor this and will advise if any changes occur.
