PRIME MINISTER RABUKA MEETS FIJIANS IN INDIA

New Delhi – The Prime Minister Honourable Sitiveni Rabuka last night reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to stre...ngthening ties with Fijians living abroad.

The head of the coalition government conveyed this message at a meeting with members of the Fijian community in India last night.

Delivering his brief remarks, Prime Minister Rabuka acknowledged the important contributions of Fijians living abroad towards Fiji’s economic development. These contributions range from education and skills to remittances and global connections.

Prime Minister Rabuka took the opportunity to update those in attendance about the nation’s progress, particularly in infrastructure, agriculture, education and land development initiatives.

He urged the Fijian community to remain proud representatives of Fiji while embracing the opportunities offered in India.

Among those in attendance was a group of 16 primary school teachers who represented Fiji at the WAGGGS Asia-Pacific Regional Conference. Others were there for medical treatment while some for studies.

Fiji and India’s longstanding and strong relationship dates back to 1879 with the arrival in Fiji of the first indentured labourers from India.

Since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two nations, Fiji and India have continued to cooperate in important areas of mutual interests and this relationship is growing exponentially.
