The Warship Nagato, named after the Japanese province of Nagato, is a dreadnought class battle ship that was built for the Imperial Japanese Navy during the 1910s. It was one of the oldest battleships that has have served in both World War I and World War II.
It was once called the fastest warship and was used to ferry supplies tosurvivors of the great Kanto earthquake in 1923. Also, it participated in the attack on Pearl Harbor, but only as a defensive ship assisting in the retreat of the attacking forces.
Armed with 4 × twin 41 cm guns ,18 × single 14 cm guns, 4 × twin 127 mm (5 in) DP guns and 98 × 25 mm (1 in) AA guns, the battle ship Nagato was a well-balanced ship capable of both defense and offensive attacks. The Nagato-class ships' waterline armor beltswere made from Vickers, cemented armor and protected 137.14 meters (449.9 ft) of the hull between the barbettes of the end turrets.
After the World War II, the Warship Nagato was selected to participate as a target ship in Operation Crossroads, a series of U.S. nuclear weapon tests held at Bikini Atoll in mid-1946, where it was sunk after two nuclear tests.
The Wreck of Nagato is one of the world’s most famous diving spots open to the public.
