I’ve been debating on whether or not to make this post, but have decided to go ahead in hopes that it prevents anyone else for having to go through this. Please be kind in your comments...we are all very raw and sensitive right now.
If you have this baby monitor do yourself a favor and unplug it and throw it away RIGHT now. Here’s a little background on the monitor and app that is used in conjunction with it.
I ordered this monitor off of amazon when I saw that it was used ...with your WiFi so you could access the video feed from your phone (convenient, right?) when you downloaded the app that went with it. You could also have multiple people download the app so they could watch. This sounded great especially with my sister in law living with us this summer.
The camera itself is able to be turned 360 degrees and can be moved remotely from the app simply by dragging your finger across your phone screen.
This afternoon I had the app pulled up and was watching Noah sleep in the bassinet in our room. I was in the living room with the only two people who had access (or so I thought) to the monitor. All of a sudden I noticed out of the corner of my eye that the camera was moving...and it was panning over to our bed. The exact spot that I breastfeed my son every day. Once the person watching realized I was not in bed, he panned back over to Noah asleep in his bassinet.
My heart immediately sank into my stomach. I realized that this morning the camera was facing our bed when I had last left it facing away from our bed and over at Noah in his bassinet. Occasionally Kevin would check in on us while at work to see how the baby was sleeping. I assumed this was the case but Kevin informed me he had not accessed the app all day.
I feel so violated. This person has watched me day in and day out in the most personal and intimate moments between my son and I. I am supposed to be my sons protector and have failed miserably. I honestly don’t ever want to go back into my own bedroom.
I hesitated to share this for obvious reasons of how personal this is but I can’t imagine any of my friends having to go through this. Again, PLEASE check your security settings on your monitors as well as your WiFi and if you have this model throw it out immediately.
We called the cops and nothing can be done. Once we tried to access the app after the incident it locked us out, leading us to believe whoever was on the other end could hear us and that we had figured out what was going on.
We have tried calling the company and the number is not in service anymore. I honestly feel like this is a terrible nightmare.
Please pray for us and we are all feeling unsettled and angry.
UPDATE: This post is gaining more attention than I ever thought it would so I thought it would be fair to update and clear up a few things. First of all THANK YOU so much to everyone for the encouragement and kind words we have received it really does mean so much.
No one ever warned us about these WiFi monitors and I truly had no idea that this could ever happen
We called amazon and reported everything that happened. They then gave us the number and email for the company. The number was out of service and obviously no one has responded to the email.
Once we tried to open the app back up after the incident it gave us an error message “insufficient permissions” and locked us out. This was also after we had an officer in our home looking at the monitor This leads me to believe that the app had been hacked and whoever was watching saw that we had figured out it was hacked.
We also tried to leave a review of the product on amazon to warn others and it conveniently said that we were not able to leave reviews of the product at that time.
We have changed all of our passwords and upped our WiFi security. This again, has been a complete nightmare. Amazon.com
* spare me your comments about how common this is and how it’s our fault for purchasing a WiFi/made in China/cheap etc monitor
* as I’ve already stated everything was password protected so please stop telling me I could have avoided this by having a strong password for my router 🙄
