5am in Catalonia on independence referendum day. At this time people who are not already at their polling stations have agreed to go to make sure the building remains open for the referendum which starts at 9am. Thousands of school buildings across the country have been occupied by pupils, parents, teachers and neighbours since Friday evening in order to counter the threat of the police, which has orders to seal buildings to prevent them from being used as polling stations.

...Catalan Mossos d'Esquadra police have visited hundreds of schools and warned people that by 6am they have to leave the premises.

On the other hand 400 Barcelona firefighters have committed themselves to guarantee the opening of polling stations. They have been joined by about 20 Basque firefighters who have travelled to Barcelona to help their colleagues to defend democratic rights. Yesterday, the mayor of Riudaura decided to remove the doors from the local school so that they can't be sealed by the police 😂

The Catalan peasants assembly is also part of the mobilisation to guarantee the referendum and since Friday they have been parking their tractors outside polling stations.

The Spanish state has sent thousands of police and civil guard officers to Catalonia to physically prevent the referendum from going ahead. Three quarters of all Spanish riot police are now in Catalonia.

Yesterday, hundreds of fascist demonstrators gathered in Madrid and Barcelona "to defend the unity of Spain", many were carrying Franco-style Spanish flags, sang fascist anthems and made the fascist salute (as well as harassing passers-by and attempting to bring down a "More democracy" banner from the Barcelona Town Hall see pic.twitter.com/XtPG4vjXrA). They were unmolested by the police which was busy looking for ballot boxes. Amongst those present at the Madrid rally was Esperanza Aguirre, former Madrid region president and prominent PP leader.

That's the 1978 regime.

Meanwhile tens of thousands marched in the Basque Country in solidarity with the Catalan people.

The stage is set for mass civil disobedience in order to ensure the referendum goes ahead, while the Spanish state will use all means at its disposal to prevent it.
