Hon. Adwoa Safo, is reported to have made a profound statement at the Women Political Leaders (WPL) Summit in Tokyo, that Insulting female politicians will soon become a crime in Ghana as included in the proposed Affirmative Action Bill, in effort to bring about gender parity in the Ghanaian society.
Her reference to Clause 38 of the Affirmative Action Bill says that ‘A person who victimizes, obstructs or exerts undue influence and submits a female politician to verbal attack…, among others, commits an offence’.
Awesome, but why only female politicians? In recent days, we’ve seen abrasive comments, debasement, insults, threats, chastisements and open vilification of female musicians, journalists, and celebrities mainly on social media without justification.
For Ghana to truly achieve gender parity, the bill must open up this particular Clause 38 to include all women. Women in the limelight, especially are being victimised with impunity.
To conclude on real empowerment of women as aimed by this bill, we must tackle abuse and cyber bullying of all women in Ghana. #DrKelly
