#SPIRITDAY #FROMALAYLEADERSDESK
The theme for this year’s #SpiritDay is #WhenIFirstSawMyself, as a way of highlighting the power of representation in media and providing community support for those experiencing bullying and identity struggle. As the Assistant to the Bishop for Communications and Development in the Metro New York Synod, and as a Queer-Latino myself, I understand the importance of representation (both public-facing and behind-the-scenes). The number of times I have been invited to strategy meetings throughout my career and been the only Latine or LGBTQIA+ person there is, unfortunately, a greater number than I feel comfortable admitting. However, it is my hope that the voice of our Synod is inclusive to all our members, regardless of race, gender, or orientation. As Lutherans, we have always been a voice for change in our tradition. Just this past 2019, we celebrated the 10th Anniversary of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America to Remove the Barrier to Ordination for LGBTQIA+ individuals, which has been a landmark example of God’s limitless love for his creation.
I want to emphasize the importance of sharing my story so that future generations never have to go through the same struggle that I, and previous generations, have experienced. To our LGBTQIA+ siblings reading this post and struggling with their truth or with finding acceptance in their home and community, know that I’ve been where you are, and you are not alone.
I’d like to ask you to take part in this year’s #SpiritDay by liking and sharing this post, or creating your own, to show support for our queer siblings and to take a stand against bullying. Make sure to add #SpiritDay and feel free to tag #MNYS and #GLAAD.
—Roberto Lara, Assistant to the Bishop for Communications and Development, Metro NY Synod; and Communications and Media Officer, Latino Ministries Association of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America
