Thanks to my father, I grew up up reading The Sunday Nation religiously. For obvious reasons, Whispers was my favourite column, followed by Popeye, Flash Gordon and Phantom. But it is in Surgeon Diary by Yusuf K Dawood that I found lots of inspiration, where I learnt lots of the craft of writing. I would later imbibe all his novels: The Price of Living, Nothing But The Truth, Return to Paradise, Behind the Mask etc.
Little did I know that years later, for over a decade, we w...ould be neighbours. Neighbours in the Lifestyle Magazine, Sunday Nation. Him on Page 11 and I on Page 12. And although we never met, his impact on me is immense. And I emulated him by having several wives: Teaching, Writing, Fiolina and my Green Kaunda Suit! And I still have openings, and energy, for more wives, like Rotary, and Xtash!
Go well Yusuf. Go well. You are gone but not gone. Till we meet.
