On April 19 the House Health Policy Committee considered HB 4531, a bill sponsored by many of the same people who voted to deregulate us. This bill (HB 4531) would license Naturopaths. Because of a section in the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and the way Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services (CMS) rules are outlined, this bill could mean that RDNs would no longer be permitted to practice in the way we do currently. Specifically eliminating reimbursement from CMS for medical ...nutrition therapy and from other health plans. HB 4531 passed the committee on May 3 and is on its way to the House for a full vote.

Your public policy team have attended these meetings, spoken to representatives and continue to try and work with the bill’s proponents to make the minor amendments necessary to avoid the huge problems bound to arise if the legislature passes HB 4531. Although we are not opposed to the licensure of naturopaths, we feel Michiganders should have the freedom and ability to keep receiving the great care they are getting from their trusted health care practitioners.

Licensure for the RDN could eliminate the impact as well, and we asked members at the Spring conference if they were in favor of pursuing licensure once again. Attendees responded with an overwhelming “yes.” This would be a huge undertaking and cannot be done by the public policy team and/or the board of directors alone. We need each and every one of you to get involved. As a constituent your unique voice has a profound impact on your legislators. Here’s what we need you to do:

Step 1: Find out who are your Michigan representative and senator. To find your Michigan representative click here: http://house.michigan.gov/mhrpublic/ and to find your Michigan senator click here: http://www.senate.michigan.gov/fysbyaddress.html

Step 2: Send an email to each to introduce yourself and what you want for Michigan RDNs (currently that we oppose HB 4531 as it is currently written for the reasons stated above).

Step 3: Every time you receive an email from the Michigan Academy asking you to reach out to your legislator – reach out to your legislator. We will provide you the details you need to form an email.

Step 4: If you would like to do even more, please contact our Executive Director, Susanne Consiglio at mda.execdir@sbcglobal.net and she will connect you with someone from the public policy team.
If nutrition is your profession, policy is your business.
