Dear Seattle,
It is with much regret we write to say that we are closing. Our last day of business will be March 26, 2017.
PUBLIC was born out of the deep respect and admiration our founder, Rob Forbes, had for the streets of Amsterdam that are teeming with bikes and people, not cars. The two-wheeled lifestyle he viewed in Europe didn't involve special clothing or technical gear. It was simple and practical. People of ages, in all forms of dress (including casual footwear) ...were on bikes and enjoying the ride.
All of us here at the Seattle shop share a similar passion and admiration for bicycles - some of us rely on them for transportation (and have been for decades), some of us ride recreationally, and some of us fall in between those categories.
But to us, the bicycle represents something bigger: it embodies empowerment in so many levels and strengthens our personal connections to the places we live and the communities we call home.
Since opening in April 2015, we've been honored and grateful to the thousands of people who have visited and purchased a bicycle from us. We've met many great, inspirational individuals with powerful stories on why they want to start cycling. And we'll miss those friends (and future friends) dearly.
The beauty of our space, our product and our service ethos resulted in creating an inclusive, welcoming bike shop on Capitol Hill. All of us walk away proud, grateful and thankful to those whom we've met and helped get back on a bike.
We built this small shop in the former space of Travelers Thali House (for those of you who go back that far!). We reached out and partnered with many different neighborhood businesses and organizations. In an ever changing urban landscape, this space will be home to somebody new soon, and we're sure they will become part of the Capitol Hill Community as well.
Through March 26, we'll have almost 50% off the entire store. Please stop by and say hi and give us one last high five (and remember, we like doughnuts, beer, Lil Woody's, Honey Hole and cider).
Thank you, Seattle, for welcoming us, partnering with us and embracing us. We look forward to seeing you riding your PUBLIC Bikes all over town.
With gratitude,
Sean, Ryan, Derek + Kara, the Public Bikes + Gear Seattle Team
