Pigford v. Glickman is a class action lawsuit brought by black farmers against the United States Department of Agriculture. The suit alleged that between 1983 and 1997 black farmers were not receiving fair consideration local USDA committees for farm loans and assistance. This included outright denials of loan and assistance requests and longer wait times for approved disbursements, putting these farmers under undue financial stress. A settlement agreement was reached, paying... out more than $1.06 billion restitution to more than 22,000 farmers through 2011. For late filers and respondents, a second case was brought (Pigford II) which eventually lead to a settlement of $1.25 billion. These two judgements are important for two reasons. First, they are two of the largest judgements the US government has ever paid to settle a discrimination lawsuit. Second, they provide concrete evidence that shows that nearly into the 21st century, the US government was continuing to, as MLK stated, “undergird [the offspring of] its white peasants from Europe with an economic floor,” a clear demonstration of what is intended by the term “white privilege.”
