FROM THE NEWSROOM: A police chase that began in the Town of Plainfield and ended with a State Trooper crashing head-on into a tree in Brooklyn late Thursday night resulted in the arrest of two individuals, according to a summary of the incident from State Police out of Troop D in Danielson.
At approximately 11 pm Thursday night, police say, Troopers attempted to stop a 2016 Chevy Impala on Route 12 in Killingly after it had exited the town of Plainfield – where officers from ...the Plainfield Police Department had attempted to pull the vehicle over before terminating their pursuit at the Killingly town line.
The vehicle failed to stop and the pursuit continued west down Route 6 into the Town of Brooklyn. Troopers attempted to box the vehicle in and roll it to a safe stop, but the vehicle swerved right and struck several mailboxes. Police say the vehicle then swerved left, intentionally striking the passenger side of a 2015 Ford Taurus Police Interceptor. As a result of the collision, the Police Interceptor struck a tree head-on, causing extensive front-end damage.
The Chevy Impala traveled off of the roadway, striking a stone wall off of Route 6 in the area of Laurel Hill Road in Brooklyn. Troopers quickly apprehended the driver – identified as 18-year-old Chad Barrett of Schoonman Avenue in Danielson, and the passenger – 19-year-old Nathan Cordell of Providence Street in Putnam.
The Trooper involved in the collision was transported to the Plainfield Backus Urgent Care center, where he was treated and later released.
After an extensive investigation, it was determined that the Chevy Impala was a stolen motor vehicle. Both individuals were held at Troop D Danielson barracks following their arrests.
Chad Barrett is being charged with reckless endangerment, drinking while operating a motor vehicle, assault on a police officer, interfering with a police officer, larceny of a motor vehicle in the 1st degree, criminal mischief in the 1st degree, possession of alcohol by a minor, illegal possession of narcotics, possession of drug paraphernalia, operating a motor vehicle without a license, failure to obey a traffic control signal, failure to drive in the proper lane, operating under the influence of alcohol, engaging police in a pursuit, reckless driving, and misuse of a license plate.
Nathan Cordell was charged with possession of weapons in a motor vehicle, possession of alcohol by a minor, and interfering with a police officer. He was held on a $5,000 cash/surety bond, while Barrett was held on a cash/surety bond of $50,000—both were scheduled to appear today at Danielson Superior Court.
