What started out as an idea to address an issue in Myanmar has become a project, a mission, and a community bigger than what we expected it to be.

SEALNet Project Myanmar 2017- Taunggyi has been a journey of months of planning, two weeks of execution with a group of more than 40 passionate and amazing young leaders set to create huge impact through little but meaningful ways.

This project has been successful in many ways we did not imagine when this idea was first drafted in... our heads and in paper.

To our mentees, we know the potential that you hold and your passion to fight for change. Know that your mentors will always be there to support you along the way.

To our mentors, we will forever be grateful for accepting the challenge to become a team member and a mentor. We hope that this experience enabled you to empower and be empower. We wish you all the best in what is next to come.

To our project partners and sponsors: Pa-O National Organization (PNO), CIE British School, Kaung Kin Phyu Co. Ltd., and EDULINK Myanmar, thank you for extending your support to help us step foot in Myanmar.

Two weeks is a short time but the project's vision lives forever. We are very proud to have brought SEALNet to Myanmar after more than 10 years and to have you as part of SELNet.

Take a look at what our two weeks was like in our official project video documentation

Our mentors' and team members' training program would not have been as great as it would have been without the support of our hotel partner at Inle Lake, Golden Island Cottages (Nampan)!

Truly one of the best accommodations to complete your Inle Lake experience.

Introducing our Mentors……… This one is Ngoc

"Hi all, I'm Ngoc from Hanoi, Vietnam. I'm 21, a semi-adult still struggling to make peace with adulthood haha. Currently I'm a junior in International Relations. I'm both a nerd and a rebel: I enjoy random deep talk about books and all other geeky stuffs until dawn and I would be the one to sneak out at midnight to join beers parties and black out afterwards lol. I may seem super reserved at first and may scare you with my resting... bitch face, but I would be so easygoing and crazy once we're more familiar with each other. So, please, be a bit patient with me when we first meet

I'm a huge fan of books. I have never gone anywhere without tucking a book into my bag. Since the beginning of 2017, I have enjoyed reading The Sympathizer, Half the Sky, When Breath Becomes Air, and The White Man's Burden. I would definitely recommend the duo Half the Sky - The White Man's Burden for anyone interested in international development, including fighting extreme poverty, battling gender inequality, or protecting human rights. The books also provide invaluable insights into development projects for the vulnerable in our society, which totally changed my point of view on the efficiency of social work. I also love listening to classic musical instruments (though I cannot play any instruments ) ) and learning foreign languages."

Introducing our Mentors……… Now is Fe from the Philippines

"Hello! I'm Fe from the Philippines! My name is pronounced "Feh" as though you were going to say something longer but just stopped at that haha. ANYWAYY... I just turned 22 years old. I graduated from the Ateneo de Manila University with a degree in Creative Writing. I took a semester abroad in Los Angeles, California at Loyola Marymount University, and I took up a year of law at the Ateneo Law School right after colle...ge. I stopped for a while, but will be going back this July! (Wish me luck!!!)

Right now, I'm trying my hand at freelance writing to pass the time (and earn income), but I'm really passionate about service work, and I guess that's why I applied here. I was part of the Ateneo Christian Life Community during my college years, and the Ateneo Human Rights Center during my stint in the law school. I hope to be a human rights lawyer one day hihi.

Some interesting facts about myself... I'm an only child, but I have a lot of babies! And by babies, I mean dogs (but we're not allowed to call them that in the house because they're family). So there's that. I love dogs. We have around five of them at home. I love animals, in general. I love to write. I'm a big fan of Broadway musicals (my favorite is Next To Normal, really REALLY good musical!) and uhm I used to play for the chess varsity of the Ateneo. I'm really good with dates (on the calendar) and I like walking long distances. I get to travel a lot thanks to my mom's job, and she and my dad are the most important people in my life."

Introducing our Mentors………… Paris from Vietnam

"Hi guys,

I am Trang Thiện Phúc, or Phúc Trang. However, my friends usually call me Paris because they say that the sound of my name is quite confusing to them....
I am Vietnamese, 20 years old and I currently study British and American Culture and Literature at university.
I am childish, socially awkward, and somehow crazy. I am also kind of a perfectionist, a heavy sleeper, and a procrastinator.
I have terrible mood swings, which irritates me a lot since I have to work according to my mood, and when it changes, I literally cannot do anything.

What makes me want to become part of our project is my belief that everyone, regardless of sex, race, religion or national origin, should always have the same rights to do whatever they love and to achieve whatever they deserve.
In addition, I also possess a great interest in learning more about Myanmar, Burmese culture and Burmese people."

Introducing our Mentors…………Another one is Julienne

"Hello, I'm Julienne but you can call me Jia, probably the loudest one you'll meet in Myanmar and could possibly the reason why Inle natives would want to leave their homes. I have a degree in Business Administration Major in Marketing Managment. I'm from the Philippines so if you want to come visit the beautiful beaches, I'll be a happy tour guide ❤️ I'm extremely extroverted along with my best friend Sheena who has been wit...h me for 11 years now. My hobbies are singing (karaoke), writing (I was in the university publication), reading books (currently reading Room by Donoghue and it's heartbreaking), and watching Korean dramas (yes, they are their own genre and my life goal is to marry an oppa loljk). Contrary to 76% of the world, I love public speaking – hosting or emceeing – so I'm open for event invitations 😂

I first heard of SEALNet back in high school when Ziggy and Veronica joined the program but joining didn't really cross my mind that time. It was when Ziggy joined again this year that I thought of giving this a shot especially because the cause we are advocating is close to my heart. As a woman myself, I want to 🎤 run the world 🎤. Lol jokes let's talk about this more when we meet in person!"

Introducing our Mentors……… Thunpicha from Thailand

"Hello everyone! I'm Thunpicha, an 18 year-old from Bangkok, Thailand 🇹🇭. I was born in Bangkok and had lived there for about 15 years before I moved to the U.S. Currently, I'm in my senior year in high school. I'm a very open-minded, outgoing, and easygoing person. I love learning new things and meeting new people, so don't be surprised if I ask you guys tons of questions about your country and your culture lol.

At school, ...I'm the president of our model UN team and vp of our mock trial team. Next year, I will be attending Boston University with a major in pre-medicine and minor in international relations.

Though, becoming a doctor is my dream, I've always interested in international relations and public affairs. One of my most incredible experiences would be interning at the Royal Thai Embassy last summer. Apart from gaining so much memorable memories and amazing experiences, I noticed the lack of women holding high positions in our ministry of foreign affairs. So from there, I became inspired to work on this issue. I also have experiences working with women and children who have been sexually abused in Thailand."

Introducing our Mentors………… It's the time for this girl, Su Thida

"Most people call me T, Teets or Thida. 19, senior at UWC Robert Bosch College Germany, IB student. I used to be a debater and a MUN-er but I found myself enjoying it less and less. Sometimes, I just want to listen to people's opinion and not have to counter their arguments. I went to Crescent Girls' School in Singapore previously and been involved President of Student Council there and those four years have re...vealed what leadership truly means and I am really grateful.

I am a nerd, I think that basically justifies why I spend most of my time with my Physics Teacher (my Scott Shifu) and with my Science Club mates. We built a life-sized trebuchet, made organic soap and attempted (emphasise attempted haha) to build a hydroturbine. Fun/Sad-fact: I am the only female in the club!! Quite disappointing isn't it? That Science and Engineering is still such a male-dominated field.

The good thing about boarding school is that you never run out of things to do.
I garden every Wednesday with my Shifu and Green Ninja friends. I do kickboxing even though I have been a weakling lately (maybe I shouldn't skip training so much). I am also a theatre kid. I sing with my band "Lights Out". I am an awful guitar player so I mostly sing haha! I lead a small yoga and meditation session every Saturday morning. It is more of a religious group so we also discuss about Buddhism or Religion in general since most of my friends are Catholic.

Leisure time: I mostly go camping and hike with my friends. Most of them are really funny, self-proclaimed SJWs and we have a lot of fun making memes about Refugee, LGBT and Women Rights. I just started skiing last year and found that I really enjoy it so when there is snow, I go skiing with my boyfriend Donovan and sometimes my Shifu and his girlfriend. Donovan and I are both into Physics and music so we play music together often for school shows and concerts. We are leading the Science Club together and tutor our juniors in Math, Chem and Physics every Thursday night.

I find the project worthwhile because Women Rights and Gender Equality is a topic we don't discuss as often as we should in Myanmar. There is so much privilege taken away from women just because we are women and most of us are brought up to believe that our primary role is to support our parents, husbands and take care of a family. I feel that any woman deserves a right to have aspirations and freedom to pursue them. So I want to play a small part in this big global mission to empower women."
