Okay yeah happy if anyone is watching it on facebook live technical difficulties as often happens so we're here with the House that I work yeah thanks Mark uh So we're here with dana for reno Co host of the five on Fox news former press Secretary uh White House press uh this is folks woman for President George W Bush and we're excited to announce that dana prayer used Any 17 commencement Speaker and if you wanna know what the videos about you just have to watch it next month when we release it so one with your questions that offer dana right before we actually filmed the pregnancy videos you can see the Green screen this is where we're gonna be Feeling it so Daniel a very cool job right now uh on Fox and if you have a very cool job a few years ago in the White House and I'm curious I think people are curious what goes into preparing for each episode of five how Do you have to spend each day with new stories staying on top of um to a certain extent is everyone kinda we can get on camera a little bit yes all of that and more I'm thinking about this earlier today that everything I've done in my life Lead up to what I'm doing now and its roof I call them as I have a full plate and it's all my favorite foods um because there will the prep for the five it's not that's not something that you Can just do in like two hours long as you could but to me you have to constantly be informed of the news and that's how most people that are working journalism feel that way I think as well specially with the 20 47 news cycle it's not like That was my first was growing up and you get the papers in the morning listen to the radio on the way home from work and watch the news now you know it's going on the news all day long because of social media um so what we try to do on the five is then not tell you what have Did that day as you already know we we are a group that talks about what we think about what happened that day so you need to go above right you need to go substance about actually happen then you need to think through um How we feel about things and that actually was an interesting transition for me to go from being somebody spoke person for so long that's what I did in my career than just speaking for myself and there are sometimes when I think I don't know what I feel about that the legalization of marijuana them come full circle on that one want to walk around and that's a great thing about the five we talk about very serious issues but now in a serious way all the time and one of the ideas about the five was it It was to be like if you are watching I am a family dinner with lots of different viewpoints so we don't script it we we know what we're gonna talk about in broad strokes because um a lot of it In the last two years I've been about President trump first candidate trump or Hillary Clinton uh now actually actually legislators part of a the trump agenda so it into play because all that is new where talking about that almost everyday what do others Raising for example I picture story this morning about how Washington dc is going to start requiring preschool at workers to have a College degree and there's controversy about that well these that something And that is not so political but you can turn things on the one hand on the other hand crystal from busted um have all come from different walks of life and backgrounds to talk about do you get nervous at all four broadcasting done hundreds to kinda get butterflies are you with Yes but one of the things I write and my book and the good news is that my speech coach years ago um and I was surprise to find myself in a final round and turn it as a freshman in College she said it's okay to have butterflies in your stomach as long as you may Applying information and I feel like if you don't have some sort of nerves then you not gonna have good energy is if you're just like Apple care then who's gonna watch that right so I think having a little bit of nurses always good But I learn in channel them better um it's a panicking that my gosh I'm gonna be on live television I think academy on live television better I'm gonna bring something to the table of what I try to do is based on my experience and my thoughts is a Or say something on air that hasn't already been said and try to bring something a little bit different or well actually on the one hand on the other hand so that I could be a little bit more I guess balance in my view point is because having been there uh in the big White House Especially during the Obama years I can say well I understand the criticism of them but you need to understand what's going on behind the scenes so I try to do that everyday so you were the press Secretary for President Bush so from one press Secretary you to another Sean spicer How would you say that shawn and impressive art whatever that well I might never with great good presbyterian there's a wonderful fraternity um and camaraderie of months press Secretary is that we never for the size each other Um only encouragement because we all know exactly how hard that job it's somebody asked me recently what advice I would give to shine and truly the only thing that I would pass on to him and you are very friendly to work together the question is two is that the job is so overwhelming and you can lose uh track of taking care of yourself and if you don't take take care of your health and get you know as much sleep as you can a But exercise and in particular for me I have terrible nutritionist of the women's hardly describe it they're both happy yes so that I do think that if I had been better about taking care of my own health I would have been in a better press Secretary and Halftime how do you prepare for each press conference have you decide do you know what the questions will be in advance and have decided to record your call well one of the things that I was very proud of that President Bush has said that whenever I went in for a press conference he was never surprised by a question All of that comes from my started in journalism and then I worked on Capitol Hill uh then I want to administration ever since and pr firms to before it was my House press Secretary so one of my goals is that I better never be surprised At my own press breaking there for the President should never be surprise in the first part of the ways to do it right which is that the press has a rhythm and you get to know the reporter so you know what they like what they're interested in you also know for example how competitive it is to get your Story on air that my if you're in broadcast journalism so try to go what would they ask in order to make sure that very looking on there that night so you can serve see if you follow the reporters closely see what they're gonna ask And I was saying as a surprise maybe couple times and final question is when you are press Secretary did you ever get any questions from reporters that you just really want to say that's a really dumb question but yeah actually one of my baby my name is one of my regret That's um at the podium is that the position is powerful and you have a lot of information and you have with the reporters me now you need that two it's not a mutually exclusive relationship tickets need to We re enforcing because I didn't get my story out of it if people can read about it and they need for me to give them information that's their job um but when you are at the podium there is an ability to be condescending And I really regret it I remember when times reporter friend from the New York times as a question and it already been asked so she clearly have been paying attention and I just I was ready to her on like The vision in front of world and I felt so bad about it cuz I got one it's not how I was raised I felt personally about it and I also knew that President Bush would appreciate either so I got back to my desk and I called her and I said I am so sorry As you said I didn't even notice that I choose is being kind to me let me let me off the hook but yes we you can get stupid questions what you consider stupid questions but that's few and far between I think I was more surprised with reporters didn't ask questions I thought I'd ask that you come out that's what I would always prepare for the toughest breaking and usually it was never bad as I thought it was gonna be thank you so much thanks dad and thanks everyone for watching that while we're gonna fill the commencement address and you'll have to tune in next month to see what it's about thanks to
