I'm heather Hey everyone this is lisa kraus I'm here for your new hq in Los Angeles and I'm very excited for today's special burger you live with dana free no she's one of the Coast that you see on the five on Fox News every single day and author of and the good news is and her most recent book let me tell you about jasper season former White House press Secretary for President George W Bush and a presenter of our latest trigger the video we're Super excited to have As a part of the program presenter family dinner Prix no thanks so much for being here with us today to modern to be on I love the experience and I've already heard from a lot of people so looking forward to your questions a great we been getting a lot of positive feedback specifically from millennial And I myself going we did the other day was after I watch your videos like holy cow I think I went through a quarter life crisis but I didn't even realize it at the time so your video is been really revealing and I think helpful to a lot of viewers and we kind of are considering and are commencement address This advice to you know young people and people in College today yeah so you are in the new mention this in your video you are really good place in your professional career in in your twenties but you still had a quarter life crisis so is the quarter life Race is sort of independent of one 's life circumstances at the time in your opinion well yes certainly but I also think that no matter where you are in your twenties you're going to go through this a little bit and that's probably because of where we were when we Younger children so when you start of be asked actually asked children this way too early now but when you were ask what do you wanna be when you grow up what are you gonna major and if you are asking seventh graders but they're going to major in in College In addition to that you're fully you're you're trying to do form as a human being and so when you're a kid you're thinking about okay well went by the time I'm 28 I'm gonna have two kids and the pic events and then by the time 30 to have a Beach Is at the shore and I'll do this epic you have build up this idea in your mind of what your life is going to be like and that's just normal uh Super human beings where children ram bitches we have all these like dreams but time your 20 like it could be that you have a Right relationship at your job is really boring or maybe you have a really good job and you can find anyone to date that was made for sure um or maybe you have a rocky relationship with your parents or something that you start to realize that oh God Shh two or three years out of College think this is all what I thought my life is going to be like and so I think we put a lot of pressure on ourselves and on each other sort of like peer pressure and also parental pressure Your um for sure there's some of that it doesn't mean that I don't think there should be some pressure to try to push people want to do things but I just think a quarter life crisis is actually natural just because it's part of growing up and realizing that life isn't going to turn out exactly as you Planet or dreamed it some things are gonna go really well some things might not go so well and over the course of your life if you can make all those things work and balance then you'll be in Super shape is Super good shape but in the mean time there's sort of this I would call I took Quarter life crisis probably last a good eighteen months to three years really can't but you do get through it and then you look back and go okay now I get it so you talking your book about the importance importance of finding a mentor and watching your video and reading about How you view of mentors it's extremely important having a mentor could help someone work through a quarter life crisis can you tell us a little bit about your mentor well I think it isn't part of me feels like I don't I can't look back and say that was something that I said it That is my mentor um part of it is that there's a series of people in your life that you look up to but there was one person that really made a difference her name is holly process and she was the chief of staff for congressman Dan schaefer the comes when I first well I work for Him when I was first doing press Secretary type work on capital help and she didn't just teach me like the basics like how to answer a press call um how to brief the boss how to pitch your story which all those things were important I feel like she really taught me about conducting myself with honor and dignity and character which were things that values that I grew up with but then to see how she implemented them in the workplace into watch her I'm The imitation is a good thing but if you see somebody that you admire and you'd like to be more like that there's no reason you can't try to emulate some of their characteristics she was punctual um she was gracious to others Super smart net Wasted the bosses time so I try to be like that too and I would say that if you don't have a mentor that you see regularly or that you are on a first name basis whether that isn't your boss maybe somebody that look for example I love calling this Educated calling us I think I'd just some of the best writers and thinkers and I love to read them all the time and so sometimes your mentor can sort of be from far away and that's okay you don't have to have somebody can go to coffee with every four weeks you can find mentors and The different places in your life alright that some helpful advice and you just already answered my follow up question about I'm very efficient yeah how do you go about finding a mentor and I think that's a really good point it could be someone that you know maybe you follow and read on social media Or like someone like yourself that you watch on television every single day that's that's really good thinking so a lot of people in the workplace especially women can find it difficult to be taken seriously early in their career was that your experience I was very fortunate if I did not have that experience I just I know what happens because I've had plenty of young women who have come to me and felt that was happening to them take in particular like when you're in that corner like prices and you're trying to make a transition Maybe you've been somebody's executive assistant for a while and you maybe you wanna make a transition into marketing or sales or management and it's hard because if you're a good executive assistant no one ever wants to let you go get my rolled on that and I'm sorry for managers out there I'm telling you if you're someone executive assistance that is a two year max opportunity in your twenties if you decide after you go try a couple of other things that that's what you love to do then go back but do not space and months executive system for law Other than two years when you're in your twenties because there's lots of other things that you might want to do in your life and it gets harder to make that transition the longer you wait so that's my concrete roll two years and you're out also don't try to become a ballerina 25 cuz if you're That's not gonna happen I think I've been happy I've been worried about my foster so that was on my mind when I did that uh he speaks through the script you also have written about how you met your husband and it's a really great story can you briefly share it and give some tips to Young women today who are dating to marry well I think there's a lot of guys to that are dating to marry and so that the key is trying to find them and there's lots of more there's lots of better ways to try to meet people now than ever when I was 25 people might sort of Scott Online dating but look around you and actually works there's a lot of people that find their love interest um through being connected through these services online no um but I met my husband on an airplane we just happen to be sitting next to each other we call it love at first light and August we'll have been together 20 years got so my my favorite piece of advice in the book as I say it is not a career limiting decision to choose to be loved I hear a lot of people say well I don't wanna get married yet because you know I have this job or I'm waiting for him to get this driver I'm waiting for this I'm waiting for their always waiting for that perfect moment when they think think back as a kid that perfect moment when I think it's gonna work for them it Is it not it was totally out of the realm of possibility that I have 25 with me a guy eighteen years my senior who was from England and living in England who had been married before had children from his first marriage I was 25 years old I'm heads over heels in love and I take that leap The state and I actually think that my marriage and having a strong personal relationship both for the fun and the laughs and the love that you get um also I just absolutely believe that it's helped my career so much in fact just earlier today in front Listen for the five I had a question about something that was going to come up having a deal with the Middle East my husband letting them well he lived in Saudi Arabia for a while for a doing medical device sales and marketing but he's also traveled extensively and there was a word I didn't quite remember and something I didn't really written couldn't quite grass when I was thinking about um some Middle East peace issues so I texted Peter and said what what is that thing again about the witch whatever he writes back In a way that I can understand like remember we went there and this is next wisely and I'm running on like I think it is so attractive that he's my personal with the and I just I love that it was better this is very Acted in his eighteen years older than me you live in another country item to quit my job and move there it was a real leap of faith but it definitely paid off so what I'm trying to encourage people is don't put off love because you think it's going to help your career I actually think that we Love enhances your career and making a commitment to somebody else will enhance your life and all sorts of ways it doesn't career whatever that's really helps but having a commitment um has really provided me lots of joy and so I hope People don't wait too long or put it off and then maybe somebody decides to move on and you think oh shoot the one that got away that's amazing advice and such a sweet Marie and I love that he's your personal work of classes the background to boot so that Doesn't love love the accent through tell me that I never lose it can you walk us through a day in the life of dana free no well as change so much in our show is gone from 5 PM eastern to 9 PM yep I'm early to bed early to I was kind of person so I just this morning I woke up at five 15 I usually wake with the Sun so then I'm like wait that was only five hours of sleep but it's so exciting what we do here in the news business that you You have time to sleep you wanna sleep you could just study all day there's breaking news you can call people um so but I try to figure out a way to have a little bit of balance in my life so I'm a dog named jasper you mention I wrote the book about him um we have a dog Walker that came every Day one o'clock for him but now I do that walk all night and when I'm on my walk of jasper I try not to look at my phone I just have it on a piece of somebody calls me but for the most part I've been able to stick to that schedule I'm a little and little confused about when to Eat um I've been having lunch around two o'clock that seems to be my biggest meal of the day yeah we're I don't wanna eat yeah um I do actually think that one of the mentoring tips I like in the in the script and also in my book is But you haven't responsibility to take care of yourself nobody else is going to help get you in shape and help you eat better or get a little bit of exercise and so that's the one thing that you actually can do for yourself you have sole responsibility for it and so I try Take that seriously plus I find that the only way that I can really think straight as if I had some exercise so I can clear my head interesting so you try to incorporate all those things into your day I do I'm not I'm not perfect by any means believe me I've been I'm trying to figure out a way to not The entire day now that I'm up from five 15 to midnight but I would love to work I love what I do so I'm fortunate that way you know plus the resident is giving us plenty of material to talk about yeah especially Prime time fucking great I love by the way they Do you ever take power naps at all so far no but if I'm looking at my eyes in this video and it looks like I don't know you're gorgeous you're totally fine sweet he also isn't quite perfect you are Currently lead some bounds ahead of him no offense Greg but breakup felt is done couple of trigger you videos with us and he's a great yeah and what's it like to work with him every single day um good just kind of like your Best friend and your brother and the guy you admire and the guy that frustrates the heck out of you all in one of our the thing I love most about people that I work with is when I can learn from them and Greg helps me think things through he sees the world a little bit differently than I do But we think enough alike that we can finish each other sentences or I start laughing before you finish the joke is I can see where it's going but sometimes it totally surprises me and so we've been sitting next week's other for six years on the show started in July two thousand 11 and we didn't even know each other before then so that's been a real joy is the work with colleagues that um get me wanted to come back being on the five that's the longest I've ever held a job usually I always move like every two to three years I Move up or move over to something else but I've been up at the five for six years and I think I'm gonna be here for up quite a while longer as long as we can keep the show going well I sure hope that you are I think you're wondering thank you to Fox news and I'm slightly biased thankfully I like to see you Go on there and I like to hold your own there were so many times during the election cycle I treat like they know speaking my language right helpful thank you the final question and it's a very serious one so brace yourself are you allowed to bring jasper Or into the Fox news building now and know that building doesn't allow dogs and that's not a Fox news polls I think that's actually the landlord the building yeah but just forget to come to the studio like every six months or so becomes birthday every year it's always a big event Um he's five years old and so americas kinda grown up knowing him and I love sharing it with people um he's a strong wonderful fabulous dog and that if you I do say in my book I know that everybody the group with the dog or things that I want a dog wants to do it you maybe before they're settled in their life where they're gonna live our House of means to take care of a dog and my advices hold off because you don't wanna be put in a position where you feel guilty everyday cuz you're not spending enough time with them or you have to get Dog away maybe your parents will take it but just hold on um there will be dogs that you will be able to take care of in the future but certainly dogs have brought me a lot of joy in my life and I would also say um it's made my marriage stronger to have A furry friend around the House that's great advice and if anybody wants to see the adventures of jasper they should definitely follow you on instagram and they do here we also talk about politics of the day dana welcome to the fit for you family we are very happy to have you as our most recent presenter and thank you for joining us
