Valdez is coming....along!
#adventuresofvaldez Valdez is coming along nicely. He is totally accepting of the lead rope all over his body now and today I introduced him to a saddle blanket. He never flinched. Very proud of him and his willingness to learn.
Look at Freckles and Heather go! Fabulous! Freckles, 11 year old Appaloosa mare, will be available for adoption to an approved home by competitive bid on June 30th, Oregon Rescue Challenge, Rim Rock Riders Event Center, Powell Butte OR. Contact us for more information!
Ride number 3 down today. We worked on this think called "woah".... Which was odd to me at first because it seemed like she wanted me to GO just a few minutes a...go.... Fickle little human. But I guess we made some good progress. There was lots of petting and scritchies so I must have done something right! Ill tell you what, this whole "body control" thing is tough! Why can't I just flail and throw myself around! Looking graceful is hard work! Until next time friends!

We are going to need soaking boots for Copper within the next few weeks. He has issues with thin soles, overgrown frogs now trimmed but with dangerous creases, and white line necropsy (possible prior laminitis). His new set of shoes included medication and pads along with lifts. He will need a series of 4 corrections, estimated. Does anyone have soaking boots they would like to donate?
Huckleberry got his much needed trim today. It was magical. When we first started he tried to lay down and to rear up. These were pain reactions. By the time we were done his head was planted in my chest, his eyes were closed, and he was letting out huge sighs of relief. Then he pleasantly skipped over to eat his dinner. A fabulous day!
Luna had a great time in her turnout this afternoon!
Luna UPDATE: Mame and Luna got turnout in the arena this afternoon. They loved it. Look at how well Luna is moving. She is getting ongoing hoofcare, medication ...and lots of TLC. She has Auntie Mame for a playmate and companion. They sure enjoyed their turnout. Look at this pony move! Thanks to everyone who has donated to her care. Sorry about the wind noise !

Valdez learned to tie! Great progress!
#adventuresofvaldez Day 5. We went for a walk down the road, hung out in the yard grazing, and worked on desensitizing to the rope. He kicked and bucked and... reared the first couple times it touched his flank and hips then settled right down and totally relaxed. We walked through some narrow passages and through the mud after a little coercing then worked on tying.
Valdez wouldn't stand near a hitching post let alone be tied to one. I use blocker ties that the rope can slide through when they pull and we worked for a couple minutes on him pulling back and me bringing him back forward. He yanked hard enough to dump him in his rear a coupe times. Then just as I thought he was starting to relax he pulled back so hard he got to the end of the 16 foot lead and it caught instead off sliding and he yanked the whole hitching post apart which set him on his rear again. I got his lead free, let him settle, and led him right back up to the other hitching post and pretended to tie him. He stood totally quiet and never offered to pull back again. Not only that, but now he follows me nice and quiet without putting any pressure on his rope.
I would say he made about a weeks progress in one lesson with the misadventures of tying.
Luna Update: The herd had trims yesterday so Luna was restricted to the stall while the other equines got hooficures. I turned them back into their big pen including Luna's companion Auntie Mame the hinny. When I let Luna out of the stall she was filled with pony attitude began to jump and buck and do rollbacks on the fence. She stood there (April Haynes is my witness) and double barrel kicked up in the air bucking really high. She must have bucked a dozen times! I ran for my... phone but by the time I came back she was done. This pony is coming back to life before our eyes! For those of you who don't know, Luna was rescued by Nadine from being caked with muck and terrible hooves. She has advanced metabolic syndrome (Cushing's Disease) and has been on medication. I expected she'd be quite sore today but that's not the case. She's a little stiff in the front but is moving great in our half frozen ice/mud footing. We've been fostering her since Feb. 20th and she's become so bright eyed and engaging. Follows me around and nickers to me when she sees me. She's a darling 20 yr pony.
On the road! First stop Grants Pass Oregon to deliver Valdez to Becky Wilson then onto Eugene where Ralo aka Rusty meets up with Kryss Cochran Helfrich for 2018 Oregon Rescue Challenge and to bring Cop into rehabilitation. #rescueroadwarriors
