QbyQ Press will no longer provide publishing services nor coordinate outreach programs. Instead, Suzahn and I will focus on creating art books that challenge textual and visual boundaries.

Our mission has always been to take a sledgehammer to these expectations. Those moments, table-ing at an event, when people wonder what-the-what kind of book they are looking are my proudest moments as an artist.

We’ve been blessed to work with amazing collaborators in the past four years... and we are infinitely thankful for everyone’s contributions to our vision of a harmonious, artistic community.

Please continue to follow us as we roll out book projects every once in a while!

"I am a baby bird; only days away from being thrown out of the nest & expected to fly" -Margo Mae Elizabeth Schwartz

Thrown Out of the Nest is a collaboration between me (big brother) and my late little sister following her death. I couldn't bare to take her clothes or many of her personal belongings. After my mother and father decided what to keep, I just wanted what was left to be donated. Pictures, songs, sights, smells, places, and memories were enough to remind me of and regret, even shame. However, I did receive all of her writing. What I found was incredibly deep, thoughtful material on entering young adulthood, doors that can be opened, some that must be closed. There was hope and pain all at the same time. I was floored. Searching for a way to reconnect with her, I came to the idea of creating a book featuring some of our writing from the same age, around 19 respectively. She would have loved that idea. We had wanted to work on something together.

QbyQ provided the artistic direction that only my creative little sister could have supplied. The final product is more than I could have imagined. I held it in my hands and thought, "That's it." First and foremost, my hope is that reader takes away a sense of who she was. I have great concern about the preservation of her memory. Additionally, my hope is that the reader, from any background or identity, will find the words identifiable or relatable somewhere within themselves. Most importantly, releasing this work was an important action of catharsis for myself.

"To be fully alive, fully human, and completely awake is to be continually thrown out of the nest. To live fully is to be always in no-man's land, to experience each moment as completely new and fresh. To live is to be willing to die over and over again." -Pema Chodron

August, 2011 🌕 The previous month I became a graduate and unemployed NYer. In this journal, I experimented with new art papers and supplies at my first FT job at New York Central Art Supply. This is a page from the beginnings of QbyQ Press, then called Qistyneryeargh.
