I caught an open captioned movie tonight. The Lion King. Loved it, but this brief post isn't about The Lion King really. It was the first open captioned movie I'd seen in probably 15 years, the ones before that actually being subtitled foreign movies.
Galaxy Theatres Luxury+ Tulare showed the movie and I am grateful. Here's why. As much as I am glad to be able to go to movies at theaters that offer the caption glasses or the Captiview devices, NOTHING beats having captions on... the screen.
For once, I could watch a movie unencumbered by bulky and uncomfortable captioning glasses that fail more often than not. For once, I didn't have to fiddle with a device to get it aligned just right.
I could watch the screen, read clear captions that weren't hard to read.
I loved it. The movie was actually pretty grand, too. Not flawless, but still fun.
Galaxy Theatres Luxury+ Tulare, PLEASE continue to offer open captioned movies. I learned about the opportunity about 45 minutes before the show. If I had known earlier, I would have promoted it to the local Deaf Community. I can get the word out next time, if there is a next time.
Deaf-related mini-PSA— if you have Deaf kids, in addition to language development incorporate memory skills development. Games, activities, discussions that require practicing use of memory will be essential for pretty much everything else. Retention of what is taught is a serious problem. Start early.
