Some photos of the confrontation.
Conflict between lobster fishermen and Aboriginals right to fish. This will effect all fisheries throughout Canada as never addressed.
An Army now at the Whar...fs of Saulnierville , Meteghan, and Weymouth including the St. Mary's Bay of Nova Scotia. This is due to fisherman against Aboriginals fishing out of seasons to protect lobster stock for time of mating . Turning into all out war! Firing rubber bullets and other side firing flares. Busting up traps . More info in my timeline.
I am sick to my stomach having just watched a live video of 13 non-Indigenous fishing boats chasing a singular Mi'kmaw fishing boat back into the harbour, firin...g flares at them, blocking them from pulling their traps, trying to run into their boat, simply because they are exercising their TREATY RIGHTS to fish this land and earn a reasonable living, under their own terms.
Folks, if you aren't aware of this, please take a minute to receive this message.
WE ARE IN UNCEDED MI'KMA'KI TERRITORY 🖤💛❤
What this translates to is that the Mi'kmaq did not give up their land, their rights and their resources as many other nations, in the land known as Canada, were strong armed/manipulated into doing. Well over 200 years ago, the Mi'kmaq nation signed a Peace and Friendship Treaty with the British ~ the colonizing ancestors of this land ~ in agreement to live harmoniously on this land.
This is not a one-sided agreement.
The British (ie. Canada) have broken this treaty time and time again. Residential schools, the 60s scoop and Indian Day schools are just some of the examples of this.
A bunch of angry, racist, greedy, privileged white fishermen violently chasing and literally hurling fire at a Mi'kmaw fishing boat like a mafia, is another example.
The DFO and the RCMP not intervening and upholding these treaty rights, keeping everyone safe, is another.
This level of hatred, racism, greed and ignorance exists in Canada ~ do not turn a blind eye to this.
Robert A Syliboy said it best "My people have the right. You don't. You got a privilege. You paid for yours. I was born with mine."
And the synchronicity of this all...with today marking the anniversary of the historic Supreme Court ruling for Donald Marshall Jr. and the right to fish out of season.
...21 years later, to date, and we see the 3rd day in a row of harrassment, in a now escalated state of violence and threat of physical harm, from a bunch of white folks threatening Mi'kmaq harvesters.
On Tuesday, when the hundreds of non-Indigenous fisherman first showed up in protest at the warf, I was in Eskasoni with my sweat brothers and sisters that evening. To be present for, and to witness the reactions to this through a non-Indigenous lens ~ the fear, the sadness, the anger, the pain that incidents like these creates within the Mi'kmaq communities is beyond heartbreaking. But what incidents like this also create is a bond of strength, resiliency and a connectedness rooted in a fierce level of pride, tradition, culture and strooooooong prayers.
And that's what happened. Strong prayers, intense sweat and singing the Mi'kmaq Honour Song with a force that simply cannot be explained through words.
The Mi'kmaq are a strong people ~ and even stronger warriors.
Remember this. Respect this. HONOUR THIS 🙏
The sheer fact that they are still in existence, the language is still alive, the teachings are still being passed on to future generations, the ceremonies are happening, a relationship of reverence and respect with Mother Earth is still happening ~ when an overpowering nation (Canada) consciously tried for over a century to eradicate them and their culture through genocide ~ should shine a bit of light on the epic levels of strength and power the Mi'kmaq yield.
A few lobsters is no match.
...but in saying that, what an absolute sin, that the white man continues, in the year 2020, to violently interject the efforts to rise from generations of oppression.
Sending strong prayers for protection, strength and courage for the L'nu fishermen out there fighting for their nation's rights.
And strong prayers for the non-Indigenous fishermen who are needing reflections of peace, unity and love shone upon the hate, separation and pain they are choosing to express and bringing forth in this world.
This race war and divide is going to end. One can either choose to align with this truth now and begin to live and breathe from the heart, or continue suffering in hate.
Because through the lens of the heart, there is only ONE ~ there is no other 🖤💛❤
