A LETTER TO THE TROJAN NATION FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT
January 12, 2018
Welcome to 2018!...
Earlier this week our architects, construction manager, and FCS staff met to further plans for upcoming construction. This project will be very complicated and it will be absolutely essential that parents, students, and staff are flexible as there will be many inconveniences throughout this project over the next 3 years. Remember that we saved voters $30 million by not building a completely new high school, but instead are replacing a significant portion of the existing school while attaching new construction to some newer portions. As stated, that can’t be done without some degree of inconvenience.
So spread the word…for the next three years, our mantra will be: BE PREPARED TO BE FLEXIBLE! That said, during this project we as a staff and community will be focused on Student Safety and will remind ourselves to keep our “Eyes on the Prize” knowing that in a short period of time we will have a beautiful, safe, and mostly new state of the art high school for our students and community.
Here are some preliminary details you need to know:
1. Bids have gone out for the high school project. The Board will take action to award bids at their February 19 Board of Education meeting.
2. Demolition and remodeling of portions of the current high school will begin around March 26. The main areas addressed in this phase of the project include demolition and remodeling of the multi-purpose room and a few classrooms and storerooms in that immediate area. This will be the location of the new drafting/engineering and art rooms which should be ready for occupancy in September 2018!
3. As soon as the ground is ready, foundations will be poured for the new portions of the high school. This could happen as early as March 26, depending on the weather, but will definitely begin before the school year ends.
4. Due to construction, the parking lot between Edgewood and the high school will be off-line beginning March 26. Both principals impacted by this situation, Ms. Upham and Mrs. Chesney, are finalizing plans to reroute bus and parent traffic flow and will communicate these changes as soon as they are done. It will be crucial to the safety of our students and staff that parents adhere to new parent drop-off and pick-up locations.
I have to say again how grateful I am to our community for the gift of this new school. In conjunction with improved academic proficiency and all the other great things happening in our district, this high school may appear to be a capstone to our efforts. But that is just the beginning. We have much to look forward to as we continue our path to being THE beacon for educational excellence on the lakeshore!
All my best for a great second semester!
