It was humbling, solemn, and moving to visit the Netherlands American Cemetery in Margraten. This is the resting place to more than 8,300 American soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice during WWII. Local Dutch families have “adopted” these fallen heroes by maintaining the grave sites, placing fresh flowers, and planting flags to honor their sacrifice. It was incredible to meet with some of the “adoptive” families and learn about this local tradition that is being passed on to the next generation. I am currently in the Netherlands with a bipartisan delegation from the House of Representatives at the invitation of the Dutch Government to highlight the deep economic, cultural, and security ties our two countries share.
