NOTE OF THE RUSSIAN LGBT SPORT FEDERATION
ON THE ATTACK AT THE PARTICIPANTS OF STARS RALLY

On 6 and 7 August 2016 Nizhny Novgorod branch of the Russian LGBT Sport Federation held a tourist meeting ‘Star Rally’ on the bank of the river Linda.
The meeting aimed to strengthen team spirit and to support sporting initiatives among the local LGBTI community. A major part of the participants was local. There were a few people from Moscow, including «Ally of Straight and LGBT people ...for Equal Rights». The program consisted of sport and social events, beach football and volleyball tournaments, different workshops and training.
The Star Rally was at a popular among local citizens holiday place, a public space. That is why in accordance with the current Russian legislation, there was no striking LGBT signs. It should also had helped to integrate the LGBT community into society: people from nearby camps were kind and none of them expressed any claims.
Around 11 pm when all participants were sitting by a fire and playing guitar, the camp was attacked. From five to eight unknown people came with bats and started crashing the participants’ cars, shouting homophobic insults. Those participants who tried to stop the assailants were beaten and received serious wounds. The rest participants had to find a shelter on the other side of the river.
As a result of this attack, three people received different injuries. Besides that, the tents were cut; personal belongings, money and documents were taken and partly thrown away nearby in the forest.
The arrived police worked for six hours to collect all material evidence, assailants’ fingerprints and to draw up reports.
During 2016 several regional events carried by the Russian LGBT Sport Federation have been disrupted: Winter Festival in St-Petersburg, Siberian Athens in Tomsk and now – the Stars Rally in Nizhny Novgorod.
The Russian LGBT Sport Federation strongly condemns criminal actions of the assailants and calls the police to solve this crime committed on the grounds of hate to sexual orientation and gender identity. The police duty is to find the perpetrators and bring them to justice court.
We draw also public and police attention to the fact that a nature of perpetrators has been changed. If earlier the Russian LGBT Sport Federation faced the perverting facts in media, refusals without clear reason at the very last moment, broken contracts, anonymous calls with a false message about a bomb threat, now the attackers violate the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation by injuring participants’ health. As for now, not a single hate crime was solved by the police and the criminals are not punished by the justice court.

(for English, scroll down)

On behalf of the Russian LGBT Sport Federation, we express to our friends and the entire Belgian nation our deepest condolences in the face of the trage...dy, which happened in Brussels today.

Through sport and our work, we got to know many good people in Belgium. They have always been very kind and ready to help us if needed. We highly appreciate their support. This morning the tragedy and sorrow came to their home country. We all are astonished with this horrible news. We feel that we cannot stay aside and keep silence. Therefore we express our deepest condolences, even though it is the smallest what we can do.

Our thoughts and our hearts remain with Belgian people.

NEDERLANDS

Today the Russian Open Games I were open!

Yes, there were problems. It was easy to predict many of them and – what’s for to keep silence? – it wasn’t easy to get over them. Nevertheless, with all our solidarity, devotion to our common goal and friendship, we faced the challenges and successfully left all the difficulties behind us opening the first Russian Open LGBT-Games!

Now we enriched our experience and got even more friends! It was so amazing to see happy faces at the op...ening ceremony and at the registration table! We thank so much everyone who were with us today and who will come at the sports venues tomorrow, on Friday, on Saturday and on Sunday! There were so many athletes from many countries of the world and many regions of Russia there. The welcoming speech was said by Konstantin Yablotsky, the President of the Russian LGBT-Sport Federation, by Elvina Yuvokaeva, the President of the Organizing Committee of the ROG, by a great Olympic athlete Greg Louganis, whom we love and appreciate so much for his visit and support, and – that was a real surprise which deeply touched our hearts! – there also was a video-message from Julianne Moore, which she made specially for the Russian Open Games! Her words encouraged us to go ahead and win!

We thank all the participants and guests of the Opening Ceremony who was strong and brave enough to stay with us and who didn’t give up. You were here. You saw everything with your own eyes. So let the world know the truth how it was to open the First Russian Open Games on February, 26th! Please, leave the comment below this news describing what you saw, what you felt, what you experienced and how LOVE and FRIENDSHIP WINS! Write the truth and unmask the falsehood!

We love you!

Hilton Hotels & Resorts hotel Leningradskaya has kicked out a planned event organized by the Russian LGBT Network. The event was planned to coincide with the st...art of the Open Games in Moscow, which also lost every single venue with which it had signed a contract. They all canceled at once.

Dear friends,

As we expected, things started to happen -- but on a greater scale than one could imagine. Throughout the past couple of hours, several venues cancelled their agreements with the organizers of the Open Games under various pretexts. In some of these cases, the organizers were informed about 'calls from the administration' that venue management received.

Hilton Hotel, where the Russian LGBT Network was planning to host a public roundtable discussion, cancelled the... agreement with them as well.

It is far beyond attempts to disrupt events by homophobic groups, but a targeted and strong decision of the authorities to not let public LGBT events happen through exterting pressure on venue owners.

The Russian LGBT Sport Federation are now revising their plans and locations. We will share further information tomorrow morning (Moscow time).

Some of you may have heard a report that Vitaly Milonov, a city legislator for St Petersburg who authored that city's law against LGBT 'propaganda', has asked Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin to cancel the Russian Open Games because we are discriminating against potential non-LGBT participants.

As the immortal (in our memories, at least) Freddie Mercury sang, the show must go on. And it is. The Russian Open Games are going ahead.

Second, they are called 'The Russian Open Games' f...or a reason: They are open to competitors, spectators or supporters regardless of sexual orientation or identity. Gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, straight, intersex, asexual -- however you identify, you are welcome to join us in celebrating sports, health and community.

We look forward to seeing you on 26 February, but if you can only afford to be there in spirit, that's great, too. Thanks for your support!
