Today we had a flip in the bookclub, one of our younger learners decided to lead the whole session, and this was after spending many hours preparing using the Sajeevta lesson planning approach. We were all deeply engaged to learn from his ideas on 'throwing away the Chalse attitude', and building give attributes for success.

At midday many of us gathered for a Sajeevta lunch at one of Gandhinagar's trendiest student restaurants where there is a shelf to exchange used-books.

In the evening we had chance to enjoy reading some of our favourite Gujarati books with children of Shiholi village as the sun was setting. A beautiful way to complete a special day for learning.

Happy Diwali to all. This year the older Sajeevta Students asked for books, and thanks to Amazon.in they've all arrived in time. Just one request is left: "London Belongs to us". The Sajeevta Bookclub has made some voracious readers and it is not often that children ask for books as gifts, and I'm an the more excited see them discuss and tell the group what the loved in these wonderful stories. I'm wishing prosperity and bountiful illumination for us all this Diwali.

9th Oct: At today's Sajeevta Sunday Bookclub we were all engrossed in hearing about the books being read. The children have figured out how to select a book that works for them, that they are excited to keep reading and excited to recommend to others. Books presented today were in Abdul Kalam, The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas, HBR on Project Management, The Secret, Aditi and the one-eyed Monkey, and, Rusty goes to London.

I was also very happy to present stipend cheques to our... first completors of Sajeevta's Internship for Employability Programme, thank you to the team at http://www.argusoft.com/ for collaborating with us on this. If you are also interested in having a Sajeevta Student as an intern at your company please contact me. The children will submit a written application and CV before being interviewed by your team, and must produce an interim report and final presentation to complete the internship of around 30 days. Sajeevta Foundation supports with covering the stipend for their transport and daily allowance. Hoping to hear from interested employers who can take a lead on building aspirations and employability.

This week's Sajeevta Book Club was joined by Saravanan and Velavan and we were all inspired to delve through the discount bookstores to find a unusual book to read, and we learned of Murakami's writing.

Most excitingly, we so much reading happening, we're about freshen the stock of books and the children instantly listed the new books they'd like added to the Sajeevta Library.

I write with excitement and these words hold the love to learn with our love to read books. The Sunday Sajeevta Book Club is running superbly, there are number of highlights to share. Each week this month we've had a series of super guest-readers: Saravanan Velusamy joined us as Sajeevta Staff and presented on "How Children Succeed" by Paul Tough, Rajeev Doraswamy a student from Pingry School in New Jersey joined us for two sessions and introduced the "Game of Thrones" book...s, Priya Doraswamy who works in Book Publishing enthralled us with some of her favourite books, and today we had Yash and Shruti from Ahmedabad who told us how Ayn Rand's "The Fountainhead" and "The Secret" by Rhonda Byrne has inspired them.

But, I've been the most excited by seeing children, who before four months ago were not having a love or excitement to read with the love a book needs. Today we had children discussing the "Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time", and the imagination of "The Enchanted Wood", other children presented on "Butterfly Lion", a book about the 26/11 terrorist attack in Mumbai, "Raman of Tenali", "Stories by Ruskin Bond", "Wreck and Zanzibar" and much more. I presented on "Rebecca" by Daphne Du Maurier, and admit being caught in the intrigue and beauty of the scenes till quite late last night. I've not heard so much interest and discussion on books that went on for two hours, a first time, and we have the happiness that: it worked, the Book Club has inspired independence in learning that enriching us widely and deeply.

Was superb to have Priya Doraswamy explain the steps of book publishing at today's Sunday Sajeevta Book Club, great to have guest speakers who love books as much as we do, and I'm welcoming more of you to drop in under the old Banyan tree at Sector 9 Shopping: every Sunday 8:00am (bring a book that you've read with you, and if we like your review we'll give you chai and pakora). Yours, Krutika

Priya Doraswamy added 6 new photos — with Rajeev Doraswamy and 5 others.

Last weekend I was at the opposite side of where I’m usually working: at a Government, UNICEF and NGO led workshop in Lucknow, but with the same aim as the inclusive education work I do on the ground in Gandhinagar. The debates were hot, and the perspectives of each person grinded hard with others. The energy of discussion pushed me to think on what we need to get on with doing to make our schools work for all children, so success is not the award that goes to the very few in our country, but becomes a guarantee for all. The Sajeevta Students have been working harder on the mathematics these last two months, including building on their mental maths, problem-solving and their excitement towards this subject. Recently we had the example of a innovative chocolate company which used various circle designs, demonstrating the use of measuring angles, symmetry and multiplying designs with creativity. See the innovation the children generated, including using a leaf, bindi, cloth and an outstanding whirling circle powered by a old mobile phone battery. Come join our classes for more such innovation, hope to see you soon.

Surveys show that around half of India's children in rural areas reach class V without being able to read fluently, this has been a long-term problem. I've seen the problem myself and it is saddening to see excitable children wanting to understand all the text about them and wanting to tell you so much more than their vocabularly allows. Thankfully Pratham Education Foundation has, over many years, developed a approach for teaching that first assesses children then groups t...hen in their learning-levels and then uses engaging activities for them to learn maths and language with meaning.

The most exciting aspect was they are introducing the "Teaching at the Right Level" approach in government primary schools, and including those in the remotest parts of Gujarat. I travelled up to Poshina (on the border of Gujarat and Rajasthan) and found it wonderful to see teachers saying even after 15-20 years of teaching we're ready to learn better ways to improve the children's learning.

Awesome work; I'm excited to see children who already love to learn, have the chance to learn well.

This weekend I was excited to see the five Sajeevta children that joined Anand Niketan School-Sughad at their Annual Sports Day, but which ones are they in the photo? we can't tell, and that for us is a success: for children of hugely different financial and social backgrounds learning happily and successfully together. It has been a long and difficult journey, these same children and their parents were all there today, smiling at me, the same parents that I've worked with so... they don't miss the bus, get clothes cleaned for school, have pencils and erasers in the school-bags, and all along with struggling to find a shelter to live in, taking mini-loans to cope with health-shocks, and getting used to all the new routines and habits a great school demands.

My afternoon was spent with the totally enthusiastic Pratham Education Foundation team as the team are getting ready to train teachers in around 2000 schools in Gujarat with the proven-to-work "Teaching at the Right Level" programme that tracks children's reading and maths levels and gives children great activities to pick up reading fluency and basic maths with both enjoyment and progress. I'm inspired and invigorated as this team prepares to work in some of Gujarat's most remote villages to raise learning levels of children who waited too long for effective teaching methods, their right level, to reach them. Wish them good luck.

Today we were excited to be at IIT-Gandhinagar to support Pratham Education Foundation's "Lakhon Mein Ek" campaign: to make visible the learning levels of India's children and promote reading and maths competency for all children. This is a great way to excite the community, parents and children about ways to solve the huge problem of children not being able to read fluently or manage basic maths like double digit subtraction. Sajeevta Foundation was glad to share its own e...xperiences of working in the community to convince parents to support education for every child and also how we've found the Pratham Kit of teaching and learning materials an exciting set of resources for children, and how we ensure children are learning at their level at the Sajeevta Learning Centre. I encourage you all to learn more about Lakhon Mein Ek and get involved after a click: www.lakhonmeinek.org/

  • Sajeevta Study Sessions started for the New Year with our year-goals...: of reading a chapter book, producing one item of work a week, and building up Mathematical problem-solving skills - and today they were working away on poetry, letters, discovering spellings along with their synonyms and antonyms and reviewing their learning of the previous 12 months.
