SandeepaChetan's Travels shared a memory.
2 years since the only time in our lives when Amazon DID NOT mean shopping, a hammock was home, didn't set foot on land for days. We travelled in a cargo boat and got our passports (yes, Indian passports) stamped at one of the remotest borders in the Amazon! We got intimate with the biggest treasures of our planet - the Amazon river and rainforest - walking, swimming, living.
This flight from Manaus to Rio de Janeiro was also the only flight we took on the continent of South America in the 5 months ![]()
After spending endless hours over the Amazon river (a total of 7 days in two cargo ships) and some crazy fun time in the Amazon forest, we now say bye bye to Amazon. Our first flight in nearly 5 months in South America ![]()
Are you a 10 places-10 days kind of a traveller? May we show you another style of travelling i.e. 10 days-1 place? Yes, we are slow travellers, and no - not because we have nothing better to do, or because it's cheaper that way.
Allow us to explain, will you?

[New post] Our 6-week itinerary through New Zealand - Link is in the bio
Wharariki South Island, New Zealandâ €
We were now driving through the farmland. There were a few homestays and guesthouses around here. The last stretch of 6 km was a gravel road, we had to drive carefully through here. The visibility was quite less because of the dust blowing up. We parked the car, and followed the directions to the beach. It was a 1.5 km walk, first through farms then a lot of sand.
...If you look at the map of NZ, this part of the south island looks like a kiwi, and the Wharariki beach is placed perfectly at the kiwi’s eye.
Read an article in Outside Magazine about the remote, threatened places. And it got us thinking about the remote places we have been to, and if we felt they were threatened. Couldn't help feel a brooding sense of urgency - to do whatever it takes to protect what we have. It all starts with awareness. Unless we know what we need to protect, how fabulous and precious these treasures are how are we to feel anything for them? Realise that we are the lucky ones to be able to see these with our eyes, and feel a sense of belonging to these places - even when they are halfway across the world.

3 years back. We were in a bit of a fix. We had returned from our travels in the Himalayas, fallen head over heels in love with the road. We knew there was no going back to our old life. We were raring to resume our travels, waiting for the sale of our house to go through, which was taking its own sweet time.
Restlessness, impatience and some anxiety had started creeping in. Soon, doubts would follow..."What the hell are we doing?"
And then, this happened. The first ever mention of our travels in media, none lesser than Yahoo travel! It was so out of the blue, but the timing couldn't have been better!
A lovely memory of our journey down this road

Post lunch at The Goat Village would be time to catch up on some reading. Or a quick nap outside on the hammock. Just lying there, with a book or doing nothing at, all revelling the moment in the embrace of the Himalayas.
If the hammock has caught your fancy, you can make it your own. Have a look at http://sandeepachetan.com/travel-gear/#Lawson and use SANDEEPACHETAN25 to get 25% off on your first purchase.
Can you spot the second road roller? O you see how precariously its perched? We did. And realised it's a miracle that these mountain roads ever get built. What a privilege that we get to travel here! One of the TravelLessons we learnt on our trip to Gangotri.

[New Post ] Exploring Garhwal Himalayas from the remote village of Raithal
Why did we choose Raithal? Mainly because we fell in love with The Goat Village. But also because it was untouched by commercial tourism. The only options to stay besides The Goat Village were the locals’ houses.

This morning, we had a brief show of why and how travel impacts our lives far beyond tourism. Coincidentally, it's #WorldTourismDay today.
We got an email informing us of the passing away of Genley Tsering Wangdus. Who is he and who had written to us and why?
Some of you might remember, we had met Wangdus Sir, a legendary art teacher from Ladakh at the Hemis monastery. He and his students were "making" a painting on the walls of the Hemis monastery. We were a little disappoi...nted that the famous library of the monastery was shut because the monk with the key was away when we saw them creating these huge works of art. We chatted for a while as they had all taken a tea break. Wangdus Sir hadn't said anything at all about who he was. When he turned his back, his student, with great pride, made us aware of the legend we were standing with. He was one of the greatest art teachers of the region, having taught 100s of students. Till date, he is the only Padmashri awardee we have ever spoken to. We were awed by not just his stature but also his humility.
So when we got the email from Siddhartha School Project informing us about his demise and asking for permission to use a picture we had taken of that meeting, it was a moment of honour. He had been involved with the school project and they wanted to send out a newsletter in his honour.
This is why we travel!

Piha beach, Auckland, New Zealand
One evening we went for an outing to the Piha beach on the west coast, around an hour’s drive from Auckland. It was starting to get cold in Auckland, so there weren’t too many people on the beach. Just a few kite surfers retiring for a day. It was just us on the long black windy beach. Far inside in the fading evening light, we could see a lion’s face carved out on a mountain cliff coming down into the water. The rocks and their formations had been an intriguing part of traveling in New Zealand.

In the 19th century, Scottish shepherds came to work on the pastoral runs of the eastern South Island in New Zealand. The high country could not have been farmed successfully without guarding by collie dog. A statue of a collie has been raised at Lake Tekapo.
There is also a dog monument in Maharashtra. Can you name the dog and place?
A beautiful miracle of nature unfolded T home last night when the BrahmaKamal bloomed at night. We've read/seen this before elsewhere and wondered over the night blooming phenomenon. It was a sheer spectacle unfolding in our balcony! #LifeinPune
