Today we celebrate #WorldElephantDay. Did you know that nearly 100 elephants are killed a day for their tusks? Today, we invite you to take action on this critical issue and sign our pledge to #StopIvoryTrade. San Francisco is the 2nd largest ivory market in the country and it is up to us to take a stand against the illegal ivory trade. There are two ways to take the pledge:
1. Stop by the Membership Services Office on your next visit, sign the pledge and get a sti...cker.
2. Sign the pledge online: http://bit.ly/2aOodsI

Did you know that fishing cats are eager and skilled swimmers?! They use their short, flattened tail like a boat rudder, helping to control their direction in the water. Happy #WorldLionDay to our 13-year-old male African lion, Jahari!
With lion populations continuing to decline, we must work together and support those working to save lions and their habitat. The Gorongosa Lion Project - Projecto Leões da Gorongosa is a wonderful example of a group committed to the long-term recovery and conservation of lions in Gorongosa! The San Francisco Zoo helps support many conservation groups, so we thank you immensely for your support! (photo by Marianne Hale)
San Francisco Zoo updated their cover photo.
Tomorrow, August 10, is #WorldLionDay. In the wild, lions are very social animals as the lion is the only big cat that lives in a group, or pride, which may number from 5 to 35 members. Unfortunately, the African Lion is listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List. Lion populations have been rapidly declining due to loss of habitat, sport hunting and poisoning to protect livestock interests. Spread the message of lion conservation today! #SavingSpecies (photo by Marianne Hale)
Happy #Caturday to our 13-year-old female snow leopard, Kelley! Celebrate Kelley and all of our big cats next weekend at #WildCatWeekend! We have a special lineup of Keeper Talks and all of our cats will receive extra enrichment to celebrate! Learn more here: http://bit.ly/2aQMP33 (photo by Marianne Hale)

We will have ten stations set up throughout the Zoo for you to go for the gold! (photo by Marianne Hale)
San Francisco Zoo shared Nashville Zoo's post.
Happy #WildWed to our friends at Nashville Zoo and their red ruffed lemur family, including three 2-month-olds!!
Happy #WildWed from our red ruffed lemur family! The rambunctious trio are two months old and still nursing and hanging out with mom, Lyra, in their off exhi...bit home until they get a little bigger.
First time mom, Lyra, gave birth on May 24, 2016. The male (Apollo) and two females (Calliope and Thalia) are the first lemurs to be born at Nashville Zoo. Because red ruffed lemurs are critically endangered in the wild, these births are important in continuing the growth of the captive population so future generations will be able to learn about this species of primate.

San Francisco Zoo shared Felid TAG's photo.
This past June, 15 Zoo professionals from 11 different AZA accredited institutions traveled to Malaysia to get a first-hand look at threats facing critically endangered tigers. Our very own Assistant Curator of Carnivores, Ashleigh Lutz-Nelson (second from left), traveled with the group who explored tiger habitats and got a better understanding of tiger conservation needs. Learn more about their tremendous experience below. #SavingSpecies #GlobalTigerDay
Early June, a group of 14 AZA tiger care professionals and one zoo photographer traveled to Malaysia to participate in the Realm of the Tiger Program with the M...alaysian Conservation Alliance for Tigers (MYCAT).
The program was designed by MYCAT to immerse its participants into the jungle ecology of one of the world’s oldest rainforests, Taman Negara, to facilitate better understanding of the critically endangered tiger’s habitat and its conservation needs. We were able to see first-hand threats facing tigers and their prey from forest fragmentation and snaring driven by the criminal trade.
Led by MYCAT, we helped protect tigers and other wildlife during anti-poaching surveillance walks, called Citizen Action for Tigers (CAT) Walks, by trekking in the last wildlife corridor linking the main mountain range and national park searching for snares and traps and documenting tiger and tiger prey signs. We helped check camera traps for monitoring diverse wildlife activity in the dense rainforest, and had the insightful opportunity to camp with the indigenous Batek Orang Asli people learning how they live in balance with the forest and wildlife.
Upon leaving Taman Negara, some of the participants were able to meet with Dr. Kae Kawanishi, founder and director of MYCAT and the American Ambassador of Malaysia at the United States Embassy in Kuala Lumpur to discuss the importance of AZA zoos and their role helping Malaysian wildlife.
We came from 11 different zoos from all around the country, and came out bonded from the adventure of a lifetime helping to save Malaysia’s last tigers. #NOMOREDEADTIGERS #SAVEWILDTIGERS #TIGERDAY16

Today we celebrate #GlobalTigerDay. Fewer than 4,000 tigers remain in the wild due to habitat loss, poaching and prey depletion and we must take action to change this. Stop by the Zoo today for a special keeper talk focused on tiger conservation at 2:30pm! Looking for more ways you can help? The Tiger Species Survival Plan (SSP) created the Tiger Conservation Campaign to support on the ground conservation efforts conducted by the Wildlife Conservation Society. They ha...ve great resources for actions you can take to #SaveWildTigers!
Pictured here is one of our Sumatran tiger ambassadors, 3-year-old female, Jillian. Jillian looks just like her father Larry, loves all enrichment and loves playing on habitat! At 3 years old, Jillian is almost ready to be matched up with a male and start participating in the Species Survival Plan. (photo by Marianne Hale)
Happy #WildWed to our favorite duo! Check out the collection of Boomerangs we have captured at the unbelievable daily Grizzly Bear Feeding at 10:30! 🐻🐻🐻
“Kiona” and “Kachina” are 13-year-old Grizzly bear sisters who were rescued and brought to the Zoo in 2005. They were found orphaned at 18 months old by Montana Fish and Wildlife. Given their age, the sisters were deemed too young to be left on their own, as bears generally stay with their mother for 24-36 months. As a ...result, San Francisco Zoo rescued the sisters in 2005 to prevent them from being euthanized. The Hearst Grizzly Gulch was built to allow the bears to serve as animal ambassadors, giving guests the opportunity to learn more about the status of grizzlies in the wild. The large exhibit provides an up-close view for guests to watch the sisters interact with one another and forage for food. Their inquisitive behavior makes learning about bear conservation fun and interesting for both children and adults. Learn more about their story here: http://bit.ly/29yaLXa

1starI just came from this zoo and how sad I was.
Every animal I saw wasn't happy. The conditionswere crammed and very poor....
So many animals to one small crammed enclosure. To think they would be happy in there enclosures is ignorant.
We were there a short time, then went back to the gate to get a refund of our $40 purely because of how strongly we felt that the animals are being treated in such a poor way and that we didn't want to fund such a facility. But they said they would not refund us.
I would not recommend going to this zoo or supportingit in any way. I think it's so sad the conditions are for those poor animals and how ignorant it is for the people working there and supporting the zoo, to think that they are happy animals.
