SCAN Oakland's White Elephant gift exchange is a fun chance to network and enjoy the season. Bring an item to gift, and be a part of the exchange. Items can be fun, nice, or just a joke. All make for more fun!

If you have a Silent Auction item from the cancelled October meeting, please bring it and we will have a small auction during the party to raise funds for the Carol Green Memorial Scholarship Fund.

We will also be collecting new sock donations for the Oakland Shelter. Guests can bring a pair of socks in exchange for their meeting dues on Dec. 12.

Dementia Communication Skills for Everyone

Please join us for an informative session on memory loss and dementia communications.
Using the “Buddies Forever” framework the experts from St. Anne’s Mead will demonstrate simple skills anyone can use to communicate successfully with someone with memory loss at any level.

You will learn:
How Age-Associated Memory Impairment, Dementia, and Alzheimer’s Disease differ
Simple communication skills in “The Everytime Introduction”
Why dementia communication is important
Attendees will gain practical knowledge in dementia communications and an enthusiasm for dementia care.

Jane Collins, Executive Director, has worked in long-term care since 1995, first as a Registered Dietitian and then as a licensed Nursing Home Administrator and Certified Assisted Living Director. She has been Executive Director at St. Anne's Mead for the past four years. Her personal life has been touched by dementia.

ROBIN HARRIS, Director of Admissions, has worked in Healthcare for more than 20 years. She is a graduate of Oakland University and has been admissions director at St. Anne’s Mead for the past five years. Her personal experience with dementia began as a teenager and continues to this day.

MICHELLE MITCHELL, Social Worker, has 16 years experience in dementia care as a Social Worker and Life Enrichment Director in long-term care settings. She has a bachelor’s degree in social work and is a seasoned Alzheimer’s Support Group Facilitator. She has training in a variety of approaches and techniques in memory care including the Eden Alternative, Best Friends Approach to Dementia Care, and St. Anne’s Mead Dementia Communications Skills program all of which she combines with her passion for the care of individuals afflicted by this illness.
