BOTANIST, WAR CORRESPONDENT - these are among the many literary 'hats' Olive Schreiner wore. On Thursday evening (27 July), Prof Paul Walters and Jeremy Fogg dramatise a stand-off between the editor of Cradock's 'Midland News' and Schreiner over a text dealing with the South African War. On Friday morning (28 July), Prof Dorothy Driver looks at the 'poetics of plants' in several Schreiner novels and the way they are used to invoke indigeneity. AFRIKAAPS is a collective of top musicians and their ground-breaking multi-media music theatre piece which has been filmed as a documentary. Dr Neville Alexander’s is one of the voices on the sound track. The Afrikaaps project celebrates the creole history of Afrikaans and liberates the language from any lingering stigma. It has won two Kyknet Awards and an international award as a result of a tour to the Netherlands in 2011. This is the subject of Ménan van Heerden’s MA thesis (Social Anthropology, Stellenbosch) and she will tell us more during her presentation at the Schreiner Karoo Writer’s Festival (Cradock, 27-30 July). TOAST AND ETIENNE in conversation ... this mustn't-miss programme item (Saturday 29 July 2017) headlines our 2017 Local Heroes theme. Both homegrown writers, Toast Coetzer and Etienne van Heerden's discussion will focus on Etienne's new book, 'Die Wereld van Charlie Oeng'. Our picture of Etienne is by Maurice Jörissen and the one of Toast is from the NB archives. The festival (Cradock 27 to 30 July) is generously supported by Nelm.
IVAN MAZEPPA was a dashing cossack who loved not too wisely ... and inspired a Tchjaikovsky opera as well as poems by Brecht, Byron and Victor Hugo (among others). Prof Tony Voss was inspired to research the recurrence of the name locally and he will share the fascinating stories he unearthed. He is scheduled to speak at 10H00 on Friday 27 July.
