'Can Scotland Now readers help Angela Williams Squires, from Newfoundland, who is trying to trace two Scottish families that cared for her great-grandfather during WWI?
Wallace Pike was a soldier from Newfoundland whose ship docked briefly in Scotland before heading to the frontline.
In 1917 he was taken in by the Fender family, from Erskine Street in Dundee, and he became friends with John Bowman and his daughter Kate, from Carmel’s Cottage, Tam’s Brig.
They treated the young soldier like family, sending letters and packages to him after he left for the frontline.
William lived a long and happy life, dying aged 99 in 1999, but he left behind memoirs in which he wrote fondly of his Scots friends.
“We are lucky to have his memoirs and learn about this,” says Angela. “He was the kindest man I knew and I think of him daily and we’d love to find relatives of the two families that made all the difference to my great-grandfather.”'
