Long Stay Dog Adopted!

People always ask us how long we will hold an animal for adoption and our response has always been that as long as the animal is adoptable, we make a committment to that animal.

Proof of that is Boris. Boris came to us on November 4th of 2015 after his previous owner moved and could not keep the dog. But, Boris was adopted on August 19th to the Perez family!

Happy Adoption Story!!

We received the following message just a few days ago which only reinforces our belief that people should adopt rather than shop. "This is a note to thank the Bonita San Diego animal services location for finding us the perfect addition to our family. We adopted Deegan (previously "Stripes"), an 8 year old boxer on new year's eve last year (2015). After 7 months... it's hard to imagine our lives without him.
He now has 2 older brothers and a annoying little sister and they all get along like they have been together forever. Deegan has accompanied us on 2 family vacations, he sleeps in bed with his head on the pillow, and he is loved like crazy.
Thank you again for helping bring this sweet boy into our lives. He will live out his life with endless love and will be spoiled rotten."

Animal Services Rescues Four Horses

In the poem that we posted last week, there was a line or two about rescuing a horse. The story about that horse (which we unfortunately had to euthanize) and three others can be found below.

The rules are simple, if you own an animal (no matter the type or size), you have a lifetime commitment to care for that animal.

County Animal Services seized four horses from a property in Boulevard Thursday and Friday after investigating reports of neglect. One severely malnourished horse was seized on Thursday night as the officer believed that very prompt action was necessary to try to save it.

'Twas the night before Friday and all through the County,

People were snuggled in bed after consuming their dinner's bounty.

...
But little did they know,

While they watched the late Olympics' show,

That Animal Services had not called it a day,

That their job never ends, that they keep plugging away.

Rescuing 43 cats and kittens from a Campo eviction,

From a house described to be in horrific condition.

URI and FELV,

And conditions completely unsanitary.

Back to the shelter they flew,

Where animals were examined to see what we could do.

Many cats they could not save,

So an act of compassion the staff gave.

Oh, and throw in a starving horse,

Which we were treating of course!

By 11 pm, the staff had given all that they could,

Knowing full well that they did what any of us would.

All of the staff should be applauded,

Their hard work and efforts lauded.

Today starts another day,

And back to Campo we are on our way.

Not to disrespect the Olympic athletes who have tested their mettle,

But Team Bonita certainly deserves a gold medal!

Animal Services to the Rescue!

Before there was even an evacuation order for the Pointe Fire, DAS had officers en route to the location. Our officers quickly evacuated eleven dogs and two cats and turned them over to their anxious owners who were waiting at the roadblocks.

The Caper of the Stolen Caper

Three years ago little Caper was stolen from a residence in Tijuana, only to be found a few days ago in the Paradise Hills neighborhood of San Diego. Who completed this cowardly caper of kidnapping Caper? We may never know.

But, because Caper was microchipped when the owners lived in San Diego, the owners got a very happy phone call from DAS advising that Caper was safe and sound! Caper was happy to see his owners and wants to let all of the ...other dogs and cats (and all of the other critters too!) know how important it is to be microchipped.

We offer microchipping for only $10 on Thursdays from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm and the $10 cost covers the registration for the chip.

Caper says "You have no excuses. If you love your pet, get him or her microchipped!"

Have you been looking for a "water ballerina"? You are IN LUCK!

Glenda (A1719633) is just over a year old, about 63 pounds and has been waiting for the perfect home since May. She is located at the Gaines street shelter. She is a ball lover and a great snuggler. She is laid back and knows basic commands.

She might prefer to be the only dog in your life and dog parks are not her "thing". She just wants to be hopelessly devoted to you!

Some people know that approximately 25% of dogs in shelters are purebred but did you know we also get purebred cats?

This gorgeous Exotic shorthair was brought to the shelter on Gaines street as a stray and is currently available for adoption. Chantilly (A1733330) is a female, approximately 2 years old.

Never heard of an Exotic Shorthair? They are often referred to as a "shorthaired" Persian...here are a few fun facts about Exotic shorthairs:

...

1. They’ve Only Been Around for 50 Years
The exotic shorthair breed began in the 1950s when American shorthairs were bred with Persians. Burmese and Russian blues were also bred with Persians to get the short-haired gene.

2. Low Maintenance
Exotics are sometimes called “the lazy man’s Persian,” because they require only weekly combing (while Persians require intensive grooming). They have a dense undercoat that gives them a puffy appearance, but even still they have little to no shedding.

3. Love of Lounging
If you’re looking for a cat who loves to cuddle, exotics are it. They tend to follow their owners around the house and will jump into your lap as much as possible.

4. They Love Companionship
Exotics love the company of others, be it from their humans or other cats (and even dogs). If you’d like more than one pet, exotics are therefore a good choice as they tend to get along well with others. Exotics are also a good choice for people who are home often… but not for those who are gone for long hours each day.

5. Garfield
It’s thought that the comic-strip cat Garfield is an exotic shorthair, due to his appearance. However, most exotics are far friendlier, and not as lazy, as the cartoon cat.

It Takes a Village to Rescue a Dog

Through the combined efforts of the Department of Animal Services, the Solana Beach Fire Department (Local 3779), the Solana Beach Public Works Department and, mostly importantly, a resident who heard the cries of a dog overnight, little Bella was rescued today from a storm drain!

Many, many thanks go to SBFD Ryan Pester for going into the hole to help rescue the dog!

...

You may notice that Pester is wearing a self-contained breathing apparatus. That is because storm drains and pipes frequently capture and hold gasses which can be deadly to people and animals.

If the Syfy channel can have "sharktopus" and all of their other unusual creations, why can't DAS get in on the fun?

Ladies and Gentlemen, allow us to introduce to you . . .

Wilbur, the dog who has the nose of a pig.

...

Wilbur, a four month old male German Shepherd, came to us on July 30th after he was found wandering in the Golden Hills area. His bifurcated ("split") nose was a congenital abnormality but did not affect him at all. He also had wounds on his neck, most likely from dog bites. Luckily, Wilbur's injuries healed well and he has already been adopted and his name changed to Oswald!

Ana, an Animal Care Attendant at the Gaines street shelter shared this:

"Little Maddie has been coming regularly to read to our pups. Yesterday I found her with my favorite (also her favorite) dog Dottie, who unfortunately is still at the shelter, but was enjoying the company 🐶"

Dottie did not find a foreverhome during #CleartheShelters day so Maddie continues to come in and read to her on Saturday's. She even came in on her Birthday!! The staff loves seeing her come in wit...h her mom, it makes their day, as well as Dottie's!
