Fantastic day in the beautiful north east of Tasmania. A pleasure to attend the official opening of the Winnaleah District High School’s new irrigation system. This scheme utilises modern electronic management and sensors to deliver highly advanced watering capability for the farm at the school. In doing so, it involves and excites students less agriculturally inclined but more IT and e-systems focussed.
Further good news is that the newly re-elected Liberal state government has promised further funds for additional upgrades of the system.
And thanks to the highly enthusiastic and knowledgeable students who provided a detailed tour of the school and its facilities.
A truly great Tasmanian...
Dame Enid Lyons was a Liberal Member of Parliament and the first woman to be elected to the House of Representatives. She was also the first woman to be a membe...r of Federal Cabinet. Dame Enid was a huge advocate for Social Services and a great leader for women and all MPs who followed her. It was great to today name the new Department of Social Services Building in her honour today.
Statement Re: Tony Benneworth
“I extend my sincere condolences to the family and friends of Tony Long and Tony Benneworth, who lost their lives in a boating accident off Tasmania’s east coast yesterday.
Both men were active, contributing members of the Launceston community and the people of northern Tasmania will be the worse off for their passing....
I knew Tony Benneworth well, particularly from his time as a state Liberal member for Bass and working with him when he ran as the Liberal Party’s candidate in the 2001 Federal election.
Later, when I was elected to the Senate, my interactions with him were relatively infrequent, but always valuable. Tony had a genuine grassroots touch, an ability to relate and listen to people, to understand their thoughts, their challenges and their feelings. His counsel, based on his interaction with Tasmanians, was always welcome and appreciated.
He, along with Tony Long, will be sadly missed.
Vale Tony Long and Tony Benneworth.”
On International Women's Day, we pay tribute to Tasmania's own Dame Enid Lyons (1897 - 1981), who smashed through the political glass ceiling and blazed a trail... for all women who followed.
A teacher by trade, Dame Enid forged a career in politics (whilst also raising her 12 children) after the death of her husband, Prime Minister Joseph Lyons.
Dame Enid became the first woman to be elected to the Legislative Council, the first woman to be elected to the House of Representatives in Federal Parliament, and after the formation of the Liberal Party of Australia in 1945, also served as the first woman in Cabinet for Prime Minister Sir Robert Menzies.
Dame Enid is remembered as a tireless campaigner for women and families, and a strong advocate for her community.

Congratulations to all involved in developing this fantastic concept. I look forward to the new hub being up and running and the multitude of benefits that will flow to Flinders Islanders.
New tourism hub set to drive growth, jobs and investment for Flinders Island!⠀⠀
We are thrilled to announce 'The Flinders Wharf Project', (in planning for ne...arly two years), has been successful under the Federal Liberal Government’s Regional Jobs and Investment Package. The project will see many new jobs created covering a range of skills from chefs, whisky making, barista, food service, marketing and design innovators, tour guides, pilots, administrative staff and IT support. Approximately five businesses will make up the new café, providore, restaurant, bar, whisky distillery, experience desk, function and office spaces - the collective’s mission is to drive local connectivity and product development, cementing Flinders as a truly unique and exciting destination to visit, live and invest.⠀⠀
Liberal Senator for Tasmania, David Bushby, said today’s project announcement followed an extensive assessment process involving strong community input. “This initiative is part of the Federal Liberal Government’s commitment to stimulate jobs and drive economic growth in Tasmania’s regions and across the country,” Senator Bushby said. “The Federal Liberal Government has committed $612,450 towards the $1,361,000 project which will provide economic growth and employment opportunities on the island and offer a steady stream of investment for the local economy.⠀⠀
“Late last year, Senator Duniam and I toured the Wharf Shed site on Flinders Island and we were both really excited at its potential to boost local tourism and expand the Island’s reputation for first class produce and products. “At the same time, the Wharf Shed will significantly increase skills capacity, generate jobs and drive future investment through the creation of a world class hospitality and tourist hub.”⠀⠀
“I am proud to be part of a team which is focussed on delivering for Tasmania - a team which works hand in glove with our State and Federal colleagues to deliver positive projects for our communities. Tasmania is heading in the right direction and this announcement adds further momentum to our states recent economic success,” Senator Bushby concluded.
Tasmania is set to see a boost in jobs and investment through the approval of funding for around 50 new projects across the state through the Federal Liberal Government’s Regional Jobs and Investment Package.
Crisp Bros. & Haywards Pty Ltd, near Launceston, will receive over $1.3 million to help fund an investment of over $3.3 million to significantly enhance their crane and building infrastructure, allowing them to expand their ability to build heavy iron and steel structures, such as girders for large bridges and the like.
This project will likely see at least 10 new jobs in construction stage and at least 12 ongoing new jobs.
Today I am commencing a last week blitz of Tasmania, promoting the Tasmanian Liberals Plan to Take Tasmania to the Next Level. Over the next five days I will tr...avel across the State, visiting all five electorates and 50 towns and suburbs.
We have the team, we have the Plan, and we have the enthusiasm and the energy required to deliver it. Only the Liberals can deliver the Majority Government that Tasmania needs. For strong, stable, Majority Government, please #Vote1To5Liberal this Saturday.
