HAPPENING NOW: The Senate is voting to repeal the Affordable Care Act. If Republicans succeed in passing this bill, 16 million Americans and 265,000 New Mexicans would lose health insurance. The cuts to Medicaid and Medicaid Expansion would devastate communities throughout New Mexico — hitting rural communities the hardest. From Roosevelt to Guadalupe to rural counties in every corner of the state, New Mexicans told me that repealing Obamacare and gutting Medicaid would force health clinics and hospitals to close, making access to care nearly impossible for so many folks in their communities. I remind my Republican colleagues once again, we aren’t just talking about numbers and statistics – we are talking about people’s lives.

Rural healthcare clinics like this this the baka of family practice clinic here really make a difference in this County community you know if trumpcare went through and you have these cuts in medicaid it would destroy these kind of clinics probably have to close and guess what's gonna happen people in this community are going to after travel miles and miles to find health care maybe 50 miles maybe more the scary part about living in new mexico's said that to to start start off off with with we we don't don't have have that that many many hotspots artists uh uh you you know know we we have have a a little little over over 40 40 hospital hospital state state wide wide about about half half of of them them are are in in the the world world areas areas and and if if you you look look at at the the mouth mouth of of new new Mexico Mexico almost almost to to the the hospitals hospitals in in the the role role areas areas are are at at least least our our way way from from each each other other so so if if you you lose lose even even one one hospital hospital in in a a whole whole area area you're you're doubling doubling the the time time to to the the emergency emergency room room the the elimination elimination of of the the the the repeal repeal of of the the the the affordable affordable care care act act would would be be a a disaster disaster in in new new Mexico Mexico uh uh and and if if this this legislation legislation is is passed passed I I really really really really will will predict predict that that many many primary primary healthcare healthcare centers centers in and new new Mexico Mexico will will shut shut down down will will close closed down down because because they they can can no no longer longer be be able able to to afford afford to to pay pay the the salaries salaries of of providers providers their their support support teams teams in in the the management management teams teams necessary necessary to to run run that that point point but but it's it's really really putting putting um um my my hospital hospital and and in in a a precarious precarious situation situation and and it's it's it's it's putting putting the other other hospitals hospitals that that are are that that are our um um less less fortunate fortunate in in farmers farmers positions positions if if these these medicaid medicaid cuts cuts for for that that happen happen you you it it would would be be devastating devastating to to us us you you know know we we would would have have to to layoff layoff providers providers cut cut back back on on services services um um worst worst case case scenario scenario it it could could cause cause us us in in the the future future if if I I kept kept on on to to have have to to close close and and then then our our community community would would be be forced forced to to travel travel 50 50 miles miles to to access access health health care care um um it it would would be be the the economic economic impact impact our our community community we're we're well well the the largest largest employers employers would would be be devastating devastating to to we we have have to to give give away away off off providers providers and and personally personally we we have have a a real real impact impact your your community community study study show show that that within within six six months months after after hospital hospital closure closure of of the the doctor doctor swimming swimming um um and and of of course course of of the the dog dog at at the the hospital hospital closes closes the the nurses nurses cancer cancer jobs jobs and and there there are are no no other other nursing nursing jobs jobs to to the the community community so so the the nurses nurses with with even even those those are are some some of of the the better better paying paying jobs jobs in in the the community community built built on on the the content content you you can can jobs jobs so so you you start start see see more more more more people people leaving leaving you you see see cuts cuts at at the the school school to to see see some some teaching teaching um um it it don't don't the the whole whole community community with with just just start start um um doing doing away away uh uh really really quickly quickly I I have have a a person person that that I I love love dearly dearly that that if if this this law law passes passes tomorrow tomorrow will will lose lose their their ability ability to to get get insurance insurance lose lose their their ability ability to to get get the the care care that that they they need need so so they they can can prolong prolong their their life life and and he he has has a a great great quality quality of of life life but but he he does does need need an an insurance insurance agency agency the the chemo chemo treatments treatments that that he's he's receiving receiving because because I'm I'm in in a a terrible terrible cancer cancer that that you you he he was was diagnosed diagnosed with with no no fault fault of of his his own own no no health health issues issues there there he he just just got got diagnosed diagnosed and and he's he's dealing dealing with with it it fighting it and doing a great job doing so we wanna see him around for many more years and I don't want anyone to be able to sit in an office in dc and make a decision that will relegate him to a distance just got to be a better way this is not a fix uh this is not a health care build and so of the affordable care act has been a fantastic fantastic piece for many new mix but now it has to be fixed but there's a way to fix it without doing away with the whole thing
