Senator Udall Asks Amtrak to Make Commitments on the Southwest Chief

Today, I went into our Senate Commerce Committee hearing ready to capture some key commitments from Amtrak on the Southwest Chief rail line. The great news is that they committed NOT to replace the rail line between Kansas and Albuquerque with buses, which would just not be safe.

However, I’m disappointed that they once again wouldn’t commit to releasing much needed funding for the Chief. I’m committed to continuing to work hard with a bipartisan group of colleagues to get the Chief all the repairs it needs— because this rail line is a vital economic engine for New Mexico and the whole southwest. It’s important that Amtrak keep working with our communities to keep the Southwest Chief on track.
