THE BRONZE SERPENT: PART II
“And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life.” John 3:14-15
The bronze serpent points to Christ’s rescue from sin....
“Jesus became what was killing us – sin itself – when he was lifted up on the cross and thereby became the remedy for sin.” Nancy Guthrie
Have you ever felt unredeemable or unforgivable by God after what you’ve done?
No matter what your sins, your doubts, your failures, God always does and will grant you eternal life if you will look to Christ and believe.
“Whoever has been bitten by the snakes of sin need only gaze on Christ and have healing for the forgiveness of sins.” Augustine
THE BRONZE SERPENT: PART I
4 The Israelites left Mount Hor and went on the road toward the Red Sea, in order to go around the country of Edom. But the people became impatient on the way 5 and grumbled at God and Moses. They said, “Why did you bring us out of Egypt to die in this desert? There is no bread and no water, and we hate this terrible food!”
6 So the Lord sent them poisonous snakes; they bit the people, and many of the Israelites died. 7 The people came to Moses a...nd said, “We sinned when we grumbled at you and the Lord. Pray that the Lord will take away these snakes.” So Moses prayed for the people.
8 The Lord said to Moses, “Make a bronze snake, and put it on a pole. When anyone who is bitten looks at it, that person will live.” 9 So Moses made a bronze snake and put it on a pole. Then when a snake bit anyone, that person looked at the bronze snake and lived.
Numbers 21:4-9 NCV
Question to ponder:
When have you allowed impatience with God’s work in your life cause you to grumble about what he has done?
The bronze serpent points to punishment for sin. Modern-day readers may find it difficult to read about the punishment delivered against sin. But Scripture is clear. God is committed to redeem and restore all things. So, sin must be punished and wiped out. Events like this reminds us of the costly nature of sin. The Israelites had to once again learn that sin leads to death. But God in his mercy chose the symbol of their punishment for sin as the very instrument of his mercy.
The [bronze] serpent saved those that looked upon it, not because they believed it to live but because it was killed, and killed with it the powers that were subject to it, being destroyed as it deserved. And what is the fitting epitaph for us? You are overthrown by the Cross. You are slain by him who is the giver of life. [Gregory of Nazianzus]
Let your identity be found in Jesus Christ. We belong to Him and are accepted by Him. We are standing on a solid foundation of God’s value for our life.

Search me, O God, and know my heart;
Try me, and know my thoughts;
and See if there be any wicked way in me,
and Lead me in the way everlasting.
Psalm 139:23-24 ASV
A special milestone for these 10 brothers and sisters, and also for our church community. As Jesus continues to change lives may we continue to be fully yielded to His Spirit working through us for the transformation of our lives and the people around us.
