One of the coolest places in Birmingham. Great stuff and fantastic prices. The owner, Ted Perry, is awesome. A definite must whether you're looking for a unique vintage piece of history or just a fun to hang out for a while. You know it's cool when my kids even like to come here with me! See More

A sad sight for any vintage sign lover. The signs and other artifacts at the replica of Ray Kroc's first McDonald's in Des Plaines, Il, are coming down and being saved for a future project. The building is to be razed soon after.
I understand that maintenance on the building comes with a cost, especially if it's prone to flooding, but I hope the folks at McDonald's have a plan to display the sign and other artifacts for everyone to enjoy for years to come.

Temperatures were in the single digits Thursday morning, but many in Des Plaines were thinking of summer nights, first dates, and when you could get a hamburger for only 15 cents.

So excited for Birmingham's Alabama Theatre, one of the winners in National Geographic's Partners in Preservation project. The Alabama will receive money to put towards restoring the original 3rd Ave N marquee and recreate and install an identical one on the 18th St N side (like in the picture below).

Thank you to everyone who participated and voted. This is going to be one Shive set of signs once they are finished! - TP

Way to go Big Alabama Sign voters! Thanks a million.

The sign is scheduled to be unveiled at a New Year's Eve celebration at the theater.|By Bob Carlton

I recently purchased this vintage Kmart Garden Shop sign from a store closing in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Unfortunately during the removal process I dropped the garden sign face. I end up coming home with a 43-year-old jigsaw puzzle. As you can see there was some damage to the end but luckily it wasn't as bad as it could've been.

Lesson learned? Be patient and bring a friend when removing a vintage sign. Still very happy to have an awesome piece of retail history. Sadly Kmart and Sears will not last very long so go out and save what you can. But always ask permission first. Stay tuned and stay Shive!

It's no mystery that I love vintage Coca-Cola advertising, especially signs. But did you know old wooden Coke crates, vending machines like the Vendo 44, and other artifacts make killer home decor? Check out the great article with fantastic samples of how 1 piece can add so much more to a room.

A future edition of Talkin' Shive - my new video blog - will feature in-depth information about vintage Coca-Cola advertising and ways that you could utilize vintage signs and other finds into your home, office or wherever!

We do not really discriminate between soft drinks, but when it comes to the world of interior design and decor, somehow Coca-Cola has managed to trump Peps

Love it when vintage signs are saved. Even better when they can be restored and repurposed for a new generation, like this sign in San Jose, Ca. Hats off to everyone involved with this. Check it out and stay Shive! - TP

Formerly Futurama Bowl I never grow tired of this sign

Interesting read. Happy Friday my Shive friends!

New York paid $8.1 million to create and install I Love NY highway signs across the state -- signage that violates federal law, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation, which claims the state knew the rules prior to installation.

Hand-painted signs are making a comeback, and the great folks like Birmingham's Tynes Signs are doing some great work!

Creighton Tynes only has to walk a couple yards outside his workshop off First Avenue North to spot a hand-painted relic that someone else tossed aside as junk. Shaded by sky-high billboards that shout for attention, Tynes reaches down to pick up a metal sign from a pile of neglected scraps.

I buy, sell and trade vintage Hot Wheels toy cars made between 1967-1977. They feature a red stripe around the tire and were made in either the US or Hong Kong. If you have one car or a collection, send me a PM or email and let's talk.
Also interested in older Matchbox and Playart brand toy cars.

Happy Friday my Shive friends and neighbors!
Hard to believe it's been a year since we closed the brick and mortar retail location. Just a friendly reminder that Shive is now on Ebay under the name shivedesign. I will also post any upcoming pop-up shops and Birmingham-area sales that I will be a part of.

Anyone going down to Sidewalk Film Festival this weekend? Stop in and have a drink from Revelator Coffee Company and be sure to check out the beautiful renovated Lyric Fine ...Arts Theatre! And wave to the Whitmire Lofts building, our former home.
