Issues facing low-income small-business owners and entrepreneurs were the subject of presentations by Skadden's Brittany Ellenberg and Matt Rietfors at the inaugural Small Business Legal Academy in L.A. on Oct. 6. We condemn the racism that took place in Charlottesville last weekend. Those actions were an affront to the fundamental principles of equality and justice that strengthen our nation.

Since its founding in 1948, one of Skadden's core values has been our commitment to diversity and inclusion. Recognizing that our differences help make us better and stronger, Skadden will always be a safe and welcoming environment for individuals who exemplify and share those values.

We thought it important at this time to reaffirm our dedication to our values and, in particular, our diversity.

Through our new Attorney Well-Being Series, we're raising awareness of mental health, substance abuse and other challenges that disproportionately impact members of the legal profession.

For our first installment, we welcomed Lisa Smith (attorney and author, “Girl Walks Out of a Bar”) and Patrick Krill (attorney, licensed and board-certified alcohol and drug counselor) (both pictured here) as well as Eileen Travis (director, NYC Bar Lawyer Assistance Program).

They discussed trends, resources and what can be done to help those who are at risk or already struggling with substance abuse.
