#SBJOJ Colloquium
I’ve been asked to facilitate a discussion for the Joy of Jazz on Friday morning at Gold Reef City and there are a couple of seats available f...or people interested in festivals, cultural policy, strategy and research.

The Key Question is:
What impact do festivals like Standard Bank Joy of Jazz have on the economy, social cohesion and cultural exchange of a City, Province and Country? #SBJOJ

The SA Cultural Observatory will also be presenting its Event Impact Calculator to kick off the discussion, with a panel engaging their calculator of Avril Joffe, Annabell Lebethe and Unathi Luthshaba - Research Manager: #SACO
There will also be five intimate focus group discussions on:
1. Government – Festivals Policy, legislation and regulation (Monica Newton)
1.1. Should festivals be hosted privately or by government and if so Why?
1.2. What would be the benefit of community ownership?

2. Do festivals need a cultural strategy or thrust? Is this the case with #SBJOJ? (Annabelle Lebethe)
2.1. Developing a festivals strategy for #SBJOJ and other festivals, what does it entail or should it entail?
2.2. Cultural Diversity and profiling audiences, how is this best achieved within a festival environment?
2.3. How do you balance the business model (profit) of a festival with a cultural strategy (impact on arts)?

3. Developing local and emerging talent, as well as international exchange, how do you balance these competing areas? – Violet Maila
3.1. What role do festivals play in developing local, regional and international touring circuits?
3.2. Or what role should they #SBJOJ play?
