This week marks the 50th Anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr's inspirational "I Have a Dream" Speech on the Mall in Washington, DC back in 1963.
This event was only a few months before JFK was gunned down in Dallas, and just a few ye...ars before both Dr. King and Robert F. Kennedy were murdered. These seminal events have shaped, in part, my view of the world we have inherited from those traumatic times.
During my journey to the home of the Blues along the Mississippi River back in 2001, I travelled with my original Blues brother Glenn Gingerich to the Lorraine Motel – the site of Dr. King’s murder.
It was a haunting and affecting experience that stirred many emotions in both of us surrounding a man we continue to regard as a hero.
Years later, when I began to commit myself to music, I penned a song lyric about that trip to the Lorraine Motel. When John Crosbie and I gathered at his home to work through the song, it was pure coincidence that he lived at the corner of Commonwealth and Lorraine in Scarborough.
The song “Lorraine” was released on my band’s inaugural album “You Don’t Know Yet” and later was honoured as a finalist in Billboard magazine’s World Song Contest.
Joining me, John and Ed Roth on that CD version were Sergio Faluotico and Jeff Eager with background vocals from Karla Goldstein, Nancy McGovern (my lovely wife) and Kate Roberts and Gail Roberts (my wonderful daughters).
This week, I have unearthed an unreleased re-mix of a live, in studio version of the song featuring: John Crosbie on guitar, David Burt on guitar, David Boire on bass, Ed Roth on accordion and Yuri Gorbachow on the kit … who was also responsible for the raw recoding.
The track was recorded live, off the floor, in a 10 x 10’ room on Carlaw Ave in east end Toronto we called the Cave. Yuri was so generous to donate that room, and his prodigious skills as a sound professional, to the cause of the band.
Neil MacDonald and David Boire, of DB Audio, later remixed the tracks and Boire recorded me doing the vocal many, many months later. Dave’s generosity and contribution on this recording are also deeply appreciated.
I hope you enjoy this raw track, and that you will be moved in some way to remember the tragic and untimely passing of a great man. A man whose teachings continue to inform the struggles of so many people; and who, even in death, calls out to those of us who will listen to help create a better, more peaceful world for all us to share.
