Firefighter Todd Hennessy’s ride in Engine 44 yesterday afternoon was something that Hollywood movies are made of. It was the first time in 2 months that he sa...t in the same riding position where he died on the morning of December 11, 2017.

While returning to the firehouse from a medical emergency, Probationary Firefighter Bryan Vogt (who was working his very first shift at SMFR) noticed that something was wrong. Engineer Eric Kapitan safely drove the Engine to a stop at Peoria and Oswego while Lieutenant Dee Lindsey called on the radio for more help. Vogt, Kapitan and Lindsey pulled Firefighter Hennessy out of the Engine, immediately began CPR and used an AED to restart his heart. It worked remarkably fast. Before the Medic Unit could arrive, Firefighter Hennessy was awake, confused and breathing just fine.

Firefighter Hennessy credits receiving help as quickly as possible to his survival and encourages everyone to learn CPR. The South Metro Safety Foundation can teach you, here is a link to upcoming classes in Parker and Centennial…

South Metro Fire Rescue added 3 new photos — with John Bolger and 2 others.

“It really happens. It comes without warning.” Those are the words of Debbie Moser. Two years ago, Debbie was with her husband, Dan, as they celebrated their f...riends’ wedding in Boston. She remembers enjoying the beautiful dessert buffet and that is where her memory ends.

She went into cardiac arrest. Luckily for her, South Metro Fire Paramedic John Bolger was onsite. He remembers a commotion building behind him. He saw Debbie lying motionless on the dance floor. Nearly 2000 miles from work, his instincts and training naturally kicked in. Within seconds, Bolger started CPR knowing that good quality compressions were needed to buy Debbie time.

Meanwhile, staff went to grab the automated external defibrillator (AED). Bolger states that the AED was the key to Debbie’s survival. Four shocks later and a steadfast, determined paramedic not willing to give up, Debbie started to come around.

Today, the results were apparent as Debbie and Dan visited Station 36 to thank John Bolger. Tears in their eyes, they handed John a lifesaver plaque and a heartfelt thank you.

South Metro Fire participates in PulsePoint Respond. This free app notifies CPR-trained bystanders about cardiac arrest events near them and helps identify the location of the closest AED. We urge the community to download this app, in order to create a strong network and chain-of-survival for the entire community.
