Respected Industry leader and long time SPARS Executive Director, Shirley Kaye has died

It is with a sad heart we share the news that Shirly Kaye, long time Executive Director of SPARS and industry leader, has passed away.

As far as most industry folks are concerned, Shirley Kaye was the only Executive Director SPARS ever had. Yes there were others, but for more than 20 years, the face of SPARS was Shirley Kaye.

Before assuming the reins of SPARS, Shirley and her husband Jesse, owned a studio in South Florida called Coconuts Recording, an experience which led them to SPARS and a 20+ year career in the recording industry. Because of Shirley’s tireless efforts, SPARS prospered and grew into a powerhouse association of recording studios, engineers and producers. Shirley turned over the management of SPARS in 2003 to spend more time with her husband and family.

The past and present members of SPARS, as well as the industry in general, will be forever indebted to Shirley for her contributions to the recording industry and the craft of audio and music production. Many of us active in the 1980s and 1990s will remember the fabulous SPARS seminars, events and parties organized by Shirley. Two such memorable events were private tours of New York’s Statue of Liberty and San Francisco’s venerable Alcatraz Island.

Kirk Imamura, Past President of SPARS and Avatar Studios stated, “Although I never had the pleasure of personally working with Shirley, I experienced her commitment to education and mentoring. As far back as the early 80s, Shirley established the tradition of regional seminars, which in recent years became the SPARS Speed Mentoring program.”

Neil Kaye, Shirley’s Son, released this statement for the family, “We write to tell you that Mom entered the world of immortality this morning. She was at peace, in no pain, and clearly set an example for all of us as to what it means to live a full and complete life. The memories and relationships she forged with each of us will be everlasting as will be her indomitable spirit. She did things her own way and while at times brash, never meant harm to anyone.

Mom did not want a funeral, or flowers, or any such fanfare. Like Dad, she wants to be remembered for her place in each of our lives, and for us all to go on working to make the world a better and happier place. She loved theater and music and dance, and when you see beauty in these performances, please take a moment to honor her in that way.”

With all our love,
Lori-Nan, Neil, and Melanie
