The Few just became fewer... One of the stars of SPITFIRE has sadly bowed out at 101 years old. Wing Commander Paul Farnes, a Hurricane pilot with 501 Squadron during the Battle of Britain, died peacefully at home in Hampshire on 28th January. An 'Ace' with six victories, he went on to fly Hurricanes in Malta and then Spitfires in Iraq and the UK before the war ended. He remained in the Royal Air Force until 1958.
In the film, we were able to illustrate his description of com...bat against Ju-87 Stukas with his original combat film from the archives of the Imperial War Museum.
Memorably - and honestly - he stated about aerial combat: "I can’t help it, but I, I did enjoy it... I think quite rightly, from the human point of view, I suppose you shouldn’t say you enjoyed it, when other people alongside you were being killed. But I’m afraid I, I probably did."
Congratulations to the Silver Spitfire team at Boultbee on their successful return from circumnavigating the globe. Not bad for an aircraft with a range of 434 miles. One of the pilots, Matt Jones, flew for us in our film. He's got quite a few more hours in his log book now!
